Chapter Twenty-Six

I could describe the next few hours, how the two of us drove to a four-star hotel. How we rented a room and tore each other’s clothes off. How the first time we made love was with Shannon in her human form, enjoying the artifice of the personage she’d constructed for herself. How the second time, though, was in her true form.

I remember thinking how I should have been repulsed by her inhuman features. How her claws, fangs, horns, and wings should have come across as monstrous, but I saw only a woman. The memory of the event, sadly, is a bit blurry because I allowed her to feed.

Shannon drained me only lightly, but the experience was orgasmic this time, stretching the length of climax for minutes and seemingly granting her an equal amount of bliss. I’d experienced some baroque pleasures in my time, but honestly, Shannon’s succubus kiss took the cake.

Strangely, one of the things I remembered most vividly was how Shannon’s hair transformed from scarlet to a breathtaking shade of raven-black. I found it curious the true color of her hair was so fascinating to me, but when I awoke beside her, I felt a little disappointment to note her hair had returned to its dyed shade of red.

Despite how much I wanted to think of what had transpired between us as a spontaneous event between two lonely people, there had been practical reasons for us to “seal the deal.” Completing the seduction allowed Shannon to tell her superiors she’d managed to lure me into bed and give me an added sense of freedom from Red Room scrutiny. As long as they felt Shannon had me under her thumb, I’d not have to worry about them assigning more agents to watch me.

After a short nap, I crawled out of bed and walked to the bathroom. I took a moment to look at myself in the mirror. My reflection had bags under its eyes and an empty, soulless look that made me wonder what I was fighting for.

“You’re being ridiculous, you know,” my reflection said, raising an eyebrow. “Do you have to turn every time you make love to a woman into something practical? Shannon likes you. You like her. Why can’t that be enough?”

“Maybe because we live in a world where nothing is what it seems,” I said, not finding it at all strange my reflection was talking to me.

“You’ve got yourself trapped in an insoluble loop,” my reflection replied, pointing at my chest.

“Because you’re such the mathematician,” I said, wrinkling my nose. “You leave that stuff to the bean counters.”

“It’s not mathematics. It’s chess with two pieces. You move left, they move right, you move right, they move left. You can play an infinite game because you can’t trap someone else alone. Except, of course, the only person you’re playing with is yourself.”

It bothered me that those words made perfect sense to me. What was I doing if not playing against my own expectations? The majority
