Chapter Thirty

They decided to walk down to the paved road near the forest and discovered it skirted the trees instead of plunging into them.

Alongside a wide lake, they met Sergeant Sean before he got to the castle and bunched inside his vehicle. After dropping Neville off at his parent’s house, they headed to the station.

As they entered the reception area, Rafferty mumbled something to Sean, and the sergeant scampered off down the hall.

Then he beckoned to Janelle and Simon. “This way.”

Simon held up a hand. “Inspector, I think we’ve been more than cooperative. It’s time for us to be on our way.”

Rafferty turned and wrinkled his large nose at him as if Simon were a freshly sliced onion. “On the contrary, Mr. Hill. I’m eager to hear your thoughts. This way,” he repeated.

And he ushered them down the hall and into the interrogation room that was beginning to feel like a second home.

Janelle gave Simon a glance and turned to Rafferty with her most alluring smile. “Surely you can see we haven’t been much help, Inspector. I don’t think there’s much else we can do.”

“I’ll be the judge of that. Sit down.”

Resisting the urge to roll her eyes, Janelle took the chair at the table near the wall, while Simon pulled out the one next to her with a quick stiff motion and sat down.

He glared at the Inspector. “I don’t know what you want from us.”

“Thoughts, comments, observations.”

Surely, he couldn’t still think they were involved in what had happened to the two girls.

Simon folded his arms and remained silent.

Janelle shrugged. “All I saw was a deserted castle a long walk away from town.”

“A castle a strange man told Lucy Dade to find,” Rafferty reminded her.

“But now Neville thinks Lucy went to Galway.”

Simon glared at the Inspector. “That’s where you should search for her next. We can’t help with that.”

Rafferty glared back.

Before the inspector could say, “Yes, you will,” Janelle folded her hands on the table. “It was such a long way to the castle, Inspector. Hannah Brennan was barefoot and hardly wearing anything. Do you really think she ran all that way?”

“If someone was chasing her. Adrenaline can make a body do wondrous things.”

The poor girl must have been scared out of her wits. “Maybe. But what if our first idea was right? What if someone had her in a car? Maybe that man Rory Greene mentioned. Maybe he had her in his black van. Maybe he stopped on the side of the road and she got out and ran.” It was what she’d said before, but she couldn’t think of another explanation.

Rafferty scowled. “Ms. Brennan was running toward the hedgerow. That would have led her back to the van.”

“What if she got lost and disoriented, running around in that field at night? She might not have even known where she was going. She was just trying to get away.”

Rafferty folded his arms. “Hmm.”

Simon rubbed his chin. “There was something odd about that castle.”

Rafferty nodded. “You noticed it too, Mr.
