Both Ash and Rook were back in the watchtower, shivering, huffing mist with every heaving breath, in spite of the warmth of the fire. Their companions watched them with wide eyes, having been woken by the commotion.

“I mean, yeah, sure, go for it. None of us wanted to sleep or anythin’ anyway . . .” Kailen said, though when she saw Ash’s tears she went quiet.

Ash cuffed his hand at his cheeks, sniffing. “What—what was that thing?” Rook only shook her head. “What happened to him? To my dad?”

Had the dark presence that had so nearly dragged them into oblivion been what had cursed his father’s soul too? Rook was trembling, her crows gently nipping at her in comfort. She looked up at Ash, her face hidden within the shadow of her hood.

“I . . . I do not know. I miss him. He . . . he was only friend I ever had.” A crow cawed with indignation. “Yes, yes. Apart from crows.”

Ash managed a laugh. “Well, I’m your friend now too.”

“Spirits help you.”

Rook had taught him so much, which was impressive, considering she couldn’t talk. But Ash still had so many questions. And the closer he got to the answers, the more frightened he became.
