Greenish brown, splotchy, and sometimes lightly spotted with black or orange flecks, hellbenders are incredibly well camouflaged. Those who have been fortunate enough to see one in the wild are baffled by its bizarre appearance. Perhaps the struggle to identify this unique creature is what resulted in a long list of nicknames; they may actually have more nicknames than any amphibian species in the world. A few of the most popular tags include: “lasagna lizards,” “devil dogs,” “mud-devils,” “water dogs,” and even “Alleghany alligators.” When it comes to the shape of their bodies, hellbenders are long and flat, with small, beady eyes and skin so slippery that handling them feels like you just sneezed up the contents of your stuffy nose into your hands. Yes, they feel that gross! Personally, my favorite nickname is the “snot otter.” If you ever happen to see one swimming, they do have a style of motion that is very similar to this mammalian predator. Combine that with their brown coloration, long bodies, and a thick layer of slime, and you can see where “snot otter” originates from.
