Chapter 17

Anyway, they removed boxes and boxes of documents from the secretary’s office,” Max is saying. “I hope the Council doesn’t make the hunters sort through them too. It’s bad enough that they’re being used as pack animals. It would make way more sense to send them out in the streets to find whoever attacked Grace. Get this – parents were informed about the break-in and the attack this morning. Mom was freaked. She’s so glad I live at home and only come here for classes. If a total outsider can break into the school, who knows what else could happen?”

Grace’s attack is obviously the hot topic today. By now, everyone knows the facts – or at least that someone broke the lock on a door and that the perpetrator was probably an ordinary human.

“It’s pretty scary,” says Lucia. “First, Teresa gets attacked in public and now this. I hope it wasn’t the same guy. But I’m sure Mr. Collins has everything under control. Obviously, I’m scared. But we have so many hunters around here...”

“But someone still risked breaking in,” says Max.

“The principal’s probably right,” Lucia points out. “Maybe the perp was looking for valuables and just saw that a door was open, went inside, and was caught off guard by Grace.”

“I don’t know,” Max mutters, looking at me. “What do you think, Teresa? You’re so quiet.”

I have no idea what to say. I didn’t tell them I was there when it happened – or nearby. I can’t right now. I don’t want to go over it all again and be bombarded with questions I have no answers to. The only thing I know is that a blood seal was opened and that the message was most likely referring to me. I’m somehow caught up in it all. But why attack Grace? Was that just a diversion to create confusion? I keep thinking about Chloe’s message and wondering if it was meant for one of the other goddesses. And if so, she’s probably after me. Not a nice thought.

“I guess Lucia’s right. The principal surely knows what needs to be done,” I reply.

Max rolls her eyes. “I still don’t think the hunters should be used as gofers. What will they have them doing next?” she mutters as we enter the classroom.

Everyone’s standing in little clusters discussing the incident. I take a seat and unpack my things. I can’t wait for class to begin so I can turn my thoughts to other things.

Mr. Brian enters the room. Normally, the conversations would stop abruptly, but today that doesn’t happen. It’s not until the teacher stands behind his lectern, clears his throat loudly, and demands the students’ attention in an annoyed tone that everyone sits down.

“I realize last night’s incident must be very upsetting for you all. But you can rest assured that all necessary steps are being taken. As the principal already explained, we assume the perpetrator was human. So there’s no reason to worry, and we can return our attention to everyday things.
