Chapter 22
I put down the last box. It contains a few books, clothes, and a potted plant Mom gave me.
âSomething green to brighten your room.â
I actually moved a few days ago, but I kept a bunch of stuff at home because I still had to organize a few things, pack, and buy furniture. Now, I just have this last box to unpack, then Iâll be done, and I can settle into my new home.
It feels strange because although Iâm allowed to arrange the room however I like, everything still feels unfamiliar. The room is painted white and has two large windows. The bed was already here, and itâs comfortable and totally adequate. The large, heavy wardrobe with a mirror, and the desk, also came with the room. All I had to get were the shelf in the corner, a table, and four chairs. I arranged the furniture the way I wanted it, hung a couple of Fridaâs pictures on the walls, made the bed, and did everything I could to make the place feel like home. But itâs not easy, because I donât really want to be here.
My phone rings. Itâs Alex.
âHow was the move? You done? Can we start your housewarming party already?â
Although Iâve been at the Siena Hartford Academy a while and even live here now, I havenât lost contact with Alex, Kate, and Chrissy, fortunately. I know it wonât be easy to maintain these friendships because there are so many things in my life that I canât talk to them about. But I mean to stay in touch with them.
âYeah, Iâm done, you can come tonight,â I reply.
I already asked Max and Lucia if outsiders are allowed inside the school or the residence.
âOnly late afternoons at school, when classes are over, but thatâs just about not disturbing the school day,â Lucia explains. âIf youâre worried about the key spirits, you know normal people canât see their true form. And the spirits are pretty savvy about staying out of sight when they need to. So, donât worry. If you want to bring someone here, obviously youâre allowed. But I recommend after hours when most students are in their rooms and itâs quieter.â
âActually, hardly anyone ever brings outsiders into the school or the residence,â Max pipes up. âTheyâre just such different worlds, and even if itâs not officially against the rules, we try not to mix them.â
Lucia elbows her lightly on the side and rolls her eyes. âThatâs just because most of us arenât friends with those people. But thereâs no reason you shouldnât be, and youâre allowed to bring them here if youâd like.â
âJust because somethingâs officially allowed doesnât mean you have to do it.â
Lucia sighs. âAs you can tell, Max has a really strong view on this. But donât let her put you off.â
I donât plan to. Still, I donât want to annoy anyone, so Iâm keeping the party small. Iâve invited my friends but only those three.
âGreat, around eight?â Alex suggests.
âSure, works for me. Can you tell Chrissy?â
âYup.
