THIRTY-ONE

Grace

“Grace?” I spin around and immediately wish I hadn’t. “Oh wow, I thought that was you.”

Harley my brothers ex and the one who thought she could stroll back into town after breaking his heart and he’d be waiting for her with opens arms rushes for me. Wrapping her arms around me she pulls me in for a hug and I look over at Julian, rolling my eyes.

“You are gorgeous,” she adds before pulling away but not fully releasing me. “But all you Jackson’s are so damn good looking so I shouldn’t be surprised.” I know it’s her way of buttering me up but I’m over her fake sweetness. I’ve heard all the stories of how she’s attempted to make AJ feel uncomfortable over the last three years.

“Thanks,” I tell her, choosing to keep it short and simple.

Harley left my brother to run off to a college across the country, She pretty much dropped him, choosing that life over her plans with Rhett. Then four years later she breeze’s into Brooklet, showing up on his doorstep in a sense as if the last four years hadn’t happened. He’d moved on, found AJ, fell in love and had a child on the way.

“Are you home for the summer?”

“I am.”

She glances over toward Julian and her smile widens. “You must be the boyfriend.”

He chuckles, “I’m a guy and a friend, but I am not the guy friend.” Harley seemed confused. I could go into telling her the details of my life, but I choose not to. I am team AJ all the way, Harley always had an ulterior motive.

“We should get together,” She skips right past the comment from Julian. “Maybe have lunch or you could come to Statesboro and see my studio.”

Yeah, that was not gonna happen.

“I’m pretty busy trying to fit in time with all my family before heading back.”

“And Terrance,” Julian adds, and I see her eyes widen in surprise, but I don’t give her any more details on that matter.

“I haven’t seen little Blake much over the last few years and with the new baby on the way I want to help AJ out as much as I can.” I know mentioning my brother and AJ are having another baby was a low blow, but I was ready to cut this short.

“Wow,” she swallows hard and places a little distance between us. “Another baby huh?”

“Yeah, Rhett is over the moon.” She just nods.

She could have gone anywhere after she graduated. She could have opened a dance studio in any city throughout the US, but she came here. She took over a studio in Statesboro and rented a house in Brooklet. From what I’ve heard she traipses around town telling stories about her and Rhett from when they were younger and whenever she sees AJ she just scowls.

Like I said I am team AJ one hundred and ten percent. AJ is my sister, and I don’t like hearing that anyone has upset my sister.

“Two kids so quickly,” she adds.
