Chapter 49

Billy headed toward the elevators felling confused. The feeling had not gone away by the time he got to Ray’s room.

“What’s wrong, Billy?” Ray said.

“I’m not sure,” Billy said, still dazed. “Take a look at these.”

Ray took the papers and read them.

“This is awesome, man. When did this happen?”

“A few days ago, but I got the papers today.”

“What papers?” Marcy said, walking in the room.

“These,” Ray said. “Take a look.”

Marcy read the papers and her eyes lit up. “Are you freakin’ kidding me?”

“Nope,” Billy said.

“That’s awesome,” Marcy said.

“You’re a hero,” Ray said. “Again.”

“What do you mean, again?” Billy said.

“When you stood up to Coleman you became a hero to millions of kids, not to mention all the injured players you stood up for too. You’ve been a hero for a while,” Ray said.

“But I didn’t do anything.”

“Sure you did. You showed people that the little guy still has a voice in this country,” Ray said.

“You also showed people that standing up for a good cause is the right thing to do,” Marcy said. “I can show you a graph that shows the meteoric rise in donations to HIP that coincide with anything to do with you. After your press conference. After the article in the paper about you. In fact, I’d like to do an article about this,” she said, holding up Billy’s papers from the fire department.

“Would people care about that?” Billy said.

“Of course they will,” Marcy said. “Like Ray said, you’re a hero.”

“You’re a positive role model that kids can look up to,” Ray said. “And that’s a rare thing these days with all the negative news. We need to remind people that there is still goodness out there.”

“You give millions of people hope, Billy,” Marcy said.

“Millions?” Billy said.

“Sure. That article was picked up by lots of newspapers around the country and even the world. I also posted it on the HIP website that gets thousands of views per day. You’re a star, Billy.”

Billy started shaking.

“Billy?” Ray said. “What’s wrong?”

He fell to the floor, convulsing.
