Chapter 13
Darcy handed off his coat, hat, and gloves to the butler as he hurried into his home, colliding with his sister as he did.
âPray, excuse me, Georgiana.â
He called his valet, and when Warrington arrived, he said, âPack my bags, please, enough for at least two weeks, and keep out clothes suitable for a wedding. I will wear them when I leave in the morning.â
Georgiana looked at him incredulously. âYou will be wearing fine clothes to travel to Rosings?â She shook her head. âI know our aunt is particular about many things, but does she truly expect you to be dressed in clothes fit for a wedding when you arrive?â
He drew in a deep breath and placed his hands on her shoulders. âI am not going to Rosings.â He paused and said softly, âI am going to Bingleyâs wedding.â
Her jaw dropped, and her eyes opened wide. âFitzwilliam Reginald Darcy! Will you never learn? You must accept that Miss Elizabeth Bennetâs feelings for you are not what yours are for her and walk away! I know it is difficult, but...â
He leaned over and kissed her cheek, preventing her from continuing. âI learned something today that has changed everything.â
She tilted her head. âPray, what could you have learned that would change everything?â
âI shall explain in due time, but if we are to get to Hertfordshire in time for Bingleyâs wedding tomorrow, we must be ready to depart early in the morning.â He leaned towards her. âYou do wish to go, do you not? Do you wish to meet Miss Elizabeth Bennet?â
Georgiana excitedly clasped her hands together. âTruly, Brother? You wish for me to accompany you?â
âIndeed! Have your maid begin packing, and I shall see you in an hour in the parlour and explain everything.â
She placed her hand on his arm. âBut Brother, you know I must return the following day. As a thank you for helping Miss Watkins practice, her family has arranged a small gathering with her friends.â She inclined her head. âI do not suppose you will want to return with me.â
He looked down, shaking his head. âI cannot guarantee anything, but I hope... I hope I will be staying longer than just one day.â
She reached up and kissed his cheek. âMrs. Annesley shall accompany us, so if you discover Miss Bennet is receptive to your being there, and you do not wish to leave Hertfordshire â and I do hope you do not â she will return with me to London.â
He watched Georgiana, her wide smile apparent, hurry away. He then proceeded up the stairs to his chambers. He took them slowly, wondering as he took each step whether anything had really changed. It was likely she did not remember their encounter. How would he reassure her that the last time they had met, it had been amicable between them? They had forgiven each other, spoken cordially to one another, and she had even accepted an invitation to his home.
He brought himself to a stop; his mouth was suddenly dry and his chest tight.
