The study.

Kate enters.

Kate Tom. I didn’t realise you’re still in here.

Tom That damn Dwarf juniper. What is it about it? Used to be so popular. Do you remember the robin that would come?

Kate No . . .

Tom Maybe it’s the robin and not the bush.

Kate How did it go with Peter?

Tom Oh, he . . . Well, he doesn’t understand.

Beat.

Kate What does that mean? Didn’t you explain it to him?

Tom Oh no, of course I explained it to him. No, what he didn’t understand was the . . . He’s got a lot riding on those Springs and he doesn’t want to see the opening delayed. I apologised for being the bearer of bad news, but . . .

Kate But what?

Tom He just doesn’t see that we have no choice. He doesn’t understand that some problems, left ignored, don’t just fade and die but actually grow. And if we do nothing now, and continue to do nothing, then the problem gets stronger, the problem goes deeper. And we’re talking about Petra’s generation there, having to deal with it. Well, that’s not right.

Pause.

Kate So then what happens now?

Tom Now? Now I do what I should have done in the first place and give Hovstad the report.

Kate Well maybe we should think about it. Take a moment to work out what’s the best way to /

Tom / We go straight to the paper. There’s nothing else we can do.

Kate You have to be careful, Tom.

Tom What do you mean?

Kate This can’t escalate. Peter has got sway, he’s got influence. He has enough power to make this a whole lot worse.

Tom But he doesn’t have the truth. And he can bang his drum as loud as he wants but the truth is a sound that rattles the bones. What he should be worrying about is how much worse I can make this for him.

Kate So you’re going to fight it out in public with your brother?

Tom That was never my intention, Katherine. But we’re talking about things bigger than us. We’re talking about justice, for Christ’s sake.
