On January 21, 1757, Rogers and about 74 rangers, with prisoners in tow, were ambushed at La Barbue Creek by a party of 120 French and American Indians hidden on the crest of a slope. Rogers got the advanced guard back up the small hill they had just descended, while his lieutenant with the main body organized a stand atop the hill in a grove of pine trees. The rangers now numbered just 57, outnumbered two to one, but they held off the enemy for nearly six hours and inflicted severe casualties on the enemy. The rangers used an originally Indian tactic of two men defending a tree, one firing while the other reloaded. The battle became a lethal sniping contest as the French could not get close enough for hand-to-hand combat. When dusk fell, Rogers ordered his men to stay silent and hold their fire — this drew the curious enemy forward into a lethal ranger volley, which inflicted more losses. Overnight, the rangers evaluated their situation and abandoned the field with almost all their wounded, and returned to Lake George next morning. (Gary Zaboly © Osprey Publishing Lid)
