My hostess insists that I cannot leave without risk of worsening my condition, so I am to stay here until I am well. Please pack some clothes and send them to me. Miss Bingley offered to lend me her clothes, but since she is at least six inches taller, they are hardly suitable.

Love,

Elizabeth

An hour later, James arrived at Netherfield. Elizabeth was overjoyed to see him enter her room. Miss Bingley had been kind enough to keep her company, but James was like a breath of home.

As soon as he entered, he said, “Lizzy! How are you? I was worried when Mama told me of your note, so I volunteered to be the one to bring you your clothes.”

Before Elizabeth could answer, she heard a soft sound come from the side of her bed. Miss Bingley’s mouth was slightly open, and her face was turning red. She quickly noticed Elizabeth’s questioning face and said, “If you will excuse me. I will leave you to your brother’s company for now.” Then, she hurried out of the room.

James’ face fell, and he said, “I hope I didn’t offend her.”

Elizabeth laughed, though it was a slightly croaky sound because of her sore throat. She said, “No, I think she was embarrassed. We are in a bedroom after all.”

“Oh,” said James. His cheeks began to turn the slightest shade of pink. “I didn’t think about it. At home, I am so surrounded by sisters that there’s no point in thinking about such things.”

Elizabeth croaked out a laugh again. “Don’t worry too much about it, James. Embarrassment is always temporary. So, what did you bring? I hope Mama packed some books.”

“I’m afraid she didn’t. You know her mind doesn’t run along those lines. She mostly packed some clothes, but I believe she added her elderflower cough elixir and some apple jam to make sure you eat.”

Elizabeth grinned. “I love her cough elixir. It tastes so good that when we were young, I would pretend to have a cough just so I could have some.”

James rolled his eyes. “I remember quite well. I had to tell you to stop because you were worrying Mama. She was starting to think you were sickly and that you were going to die young.”

They chatted for a bit longer until Elizabeth’s voice got tired. Then James said he would go in search of something to read for her. When he left, Elizabeth laid back on the pillows and closed her eyes to rest for a bit.
