CHAPTER 13

Murder Postponed

Thiago checked the roast potatoes were ready and flipped the steak to sear it on the grill. It would be Rashaad’s last meal. As soon as they reached the main river, he would kill Rashaad and steal the boat. He had already planned his course to Bolivar where he would be free from the clutches of the federal police force searching for him. It would mean starting over again, but he had done it before when he had been forced from São Paulo to Brasilia.

He felt the boat bump gently against the bank where it would be moored for the night. Rashaad would come down to eat once he had secured the boat to the shore. Thiago had decided to carry out the deed after dinner, on deck. He would kill Rashaad and push him overboard for the piranhas to dispose of. He had thought of leaving Rashaad stranded on shore, but there was always the risk of him reaching one of the mining or logging camps strewn around the area and contacting the federals to stop him before he reached the safety of Bolivar’s border.

“The steak smells delicious, Flynn,” commented Rashaad as he entered the galley.

“Take a seat. It’s almost ready.”

Rashaad sat on one of the padded benches on either side of the table where two place settings had already been set. Thiago placed a plate of steak, crispy roast potatoes, and carrots and peas in front of Rashaad and then sat down opposite with his own plate of food.

Rashaad cut off a piece of steak and eagerly placed in his mouth. “Nothing against Ravel, Flynn,” he said between chews, “but he never cooked steak as delicious as this.”

“Thanks.”

“I wonder what happened to him. It’s not like Ravel to miss a trip.”

“Maybe he overslept or had woman trouble,” suggested Thiago as he wondered if the body had been discovered. Hopefully, it had gone unnoticed and dumped with the rubbish and buried; a fitting burial for a pedophile.

“Possible I suppose,” said Rashaad, unconvinced. “But if the rest of your cooking proves to be as good as this steak, I’m glad he missed the boat.”

Thiago smiled at the man’s words, knowing his view would soon change when he felt the knife in his ribs.

After dinner, the two men stood on the deck smoking as they gazed out onto the river, listening to the creatures” strange sounds filling the warm night air. Thiago pulled the sharp long-bladed knife he had used earlier to trim the steak from where he had tucked into the waistband of his trousers. It was time for the piranhas to have their supper.

“I wonder if they have found Dead Horse Camp yet.”

“Why is Dead Horse Camp so important?” Thiago questioned.

“It was the place where Fawcett was seen last.”

“I find it hard to fathom the reason for following in the explorer’s footsteps when he disappeared so long ago.”

“It’s what he found that they are ultimately looking for,” answered Rashaad as he blew a stream of smoke into the air.
