AARON gave himself another wipe down and a shave. He left Dancer to her grazing and ambled casually along the road. As he made his way through town, he noticed a kind of lightness in the people he passed. The gentlemen tipped their hats and the ladies graced him with smiles and nods.
He took the time to actually look around, glancing down the side streets. Unlike the usual sprawling mess of most boom towns, the streets were in a neat grid. Shops and businesses were grouped together in ways that made sense. The larger streets were cobbled, and the buildings fit together. It looked as if someone had put some thought into a town that probably hadnât even existed just a few years earlier.
He let himself into the sheriffâs office where Connor was sitting behind his desk with his nose in some papers. A pot of coffee was steaming lightly on the office stove and putting out a comforting smell. As much as he liked Jonahâs tea, Aaron had been craving coffee most of the day.
âMind if I have a cup of that?â
Connor looked up. âHelp yourself. Nice to see you escaped the library.â
Aaron poured himself a large cup and took a sip. âI must be getting old. I woke up and decided that maybe Iâd just laze around in bed for a bit.â
âLucky for some. You heading out?â
Aaron looked into his cup and gave a half shrug. âDancerâs favoring one foot a bit, and Iâve been pushing her hard the last few months. Been pushing myself as well. I think it might be a decent idea if I just stick around for a few days, get some laundry done, put my feet up, kept off hers.â
Connor grinned and shook his head. âYou are getting old. The Aaron Byrne I first met hadnât changed his clothes in two months and was damn proud of it.â
âThe Aaron Byrne you first met had spent two months scouting behind enemy lines and was a little too busy staying alive to worry about things like that. And if I recall, you werenât exactly looking pretty yourself that day.â
âI will concede you that.â Connor got up and poured himself a cup of coffee as well, draining the pot.
âYou dropped the Buckleys into the ground yet?â
âNot yet, but I found a couple of men willing to dig a hole for them in the morning. Figure they can share one. No point wasting the sweat or the space. Theyâre stinking up the back room of our horse doctor right now.â
âAny kind of grave is better than they deserve.â
âAinât that the truth? Anyway, if youâre sticking around, Iâve been invited around to Miss Evaâs tonight. She sets the best table, and word has it she just got in a shipment of mighty fine whiskey.â
Aaron had quietly hoped to have slightly different plans for the evening, but he couldnât exactly tell Connor heâd rather be spending the night in the library, as he called it, or possibly even looking at the rings of Saturn again.
