ALKALINE WATER

While most health seekers are on cleansing diets, hitting the gym, practicing yoga, purifying air through filters, water quality has not been high on the agenda.

It seems the time to address water quality beyond microbial purity has come.

Human body requires a tightly controlled pH level in the serum of about 7.4 (a slightly alkaline range of 7.35 to 7.45) to survive.

There is emerging evidence to suggest that the PH of water has a strong correlation with the functioning of our body and prevention of diseases.

Alkaline water has a slightly higher PH than conventional water. Practitioners of traditional medicine have believed that alkaline water has potential benefits in disease prevention and longevity recently.

‘Alkaline Water’ was mentioned in the title of a peer reviewed, scientific journal (Journal of Medical Association JAMA Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2017) for the first time since 1924. According to the paper alkaline water and Mediterranean diets are more effective than proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s) the most commonly used antacids to treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease also known as GERD.

The article concludes that eating a Mediterranean diet and drinking alkaline water is a more effective treatment for GERD compared to over the counter acid reducers. The study participants did not take digestive support from herbs, enzymes or probiotics but still were able to achieve highly significant results with diet and alkaline water alone. Alkaline water is defined as having a pH around 8.0 and the Mediterranean diet is primarily plant based.

The importance of this is more significant as regular use of PPIs is in fact linked to several side effects including cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease and increased risk of infections. A paper published in J Environ Public Health in 2011 reported Alkaline pH of diet rich in plant food has a significance not only for digestion and longevity but also for heart health, cognition, cancer prevention, better outcomes during chemotherapy, bone and muscle building, availability of minerals, chronic back and joint pains.

Alkaline water can be produced by some special equipments or through natural spring or mineral water. Tap water is subjected to chemical treatments and chlorination which increases the damaging free radicals & oxidation which can cause damage to our cells and make us fatigued or diseased. All in all alkaline water can play a huge role in elevating health and prevention of diseases. Alkaline water can be prepared in your kitchen with equipments available easily and also purchased ready made.
