CHAPTER 15

Tonight’s sunset was glorious. The orange sun was turning the sea on the horizon into a band of molten gold, marking the end of another beautiful summer’s day.

Violet was sitting out in the garden with Bella, Frankie and Rose. Winnie had taken herself off for a long soak in the bath, which was a good thing, Violet thought, as the young woman had been quiet since they’d returned from their walk at the beach. She probably needed some time on her own to think. Trixie had gone upstairs with Winnie, never liking to be far away from her mistress.

‘Look at that, isn’t it magnificent?’ Bella waved towards the horizon. ‘Watching a sunset over the sea makes me feel how tiny we are in the grand scheme of things. The sun keeps on rising and setting no matter what ridiculous actions humans are doing.’

Frankie put her arm around her friend’s shoulders as they sat side by side on the rug. ‘You sound like a wise sage of old.’

Bella laughed. ‘It does though, the sun carries on regardless of what stupid things people get up to. All through the war, while bombs were being dropped on London, armies invading other countries, it kept on rising and setting, day after day. It was one certainty in the world when all else was mayhem.’

‘I remember some mornings when it was ’ard to tell if the sun ’ad risen again after an air raid, what with the amount of smoke billowing up from the inferno at the docks,’ Frankie said, in a heartfelt voice.

‘And thank goodness that is now in the past,’ Violet said. ‘And that peace has been restored.’ She regarded the three young women, thinking how their time working at Station 75 and their experiences of rescuing casualties in a city under attack had bound them together. It was part of their shared history, something they’d always remember. Others who hadn’t experienced it couldn’t understand what it had been like. That made their friendship even more precious because they understood each other.

‘We’ll never forget what we went through, but we need to move on into the future,’ Rose said. ‘Look at how our lives have all changed since then.’

‘And one of us is about to make another big change.’ Frankie smiled at Violet. ‘Only a few more days and you’ll ’ave a husband.’

Violet nodded, her mouth breaking into a smile. ‘Indeed, and that’s something I never thought would happen! And I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to wear and would like to accept your kind offer to restyle the wedding dress.’

‘Really?’ Frankie’s eyes widened.

‘Yes. If you’ve come up with some different designs, we should choose one tonight. Then I’ll go home and fetch the dress in the morning and borrow my mother’s sewing machine and box with all her equipment in it, and we can get started,’ Violet suggested.

‘That’s fantastic!’ Frankie’s face lit up. ‘It will be so much nicer to get married in a proper wedding dress.’

‘What’s this?’ Rose asked.

‘Frankie
