Cyprian

The Rebaptism Controversy

Key Ideas

Both the rigorist and laxist parties opposed Cyprian and even elected their own rival bishops of Carthage.

Cyprian argued that baptisms by both schismatics and heretics were not legitimate because those clergy were not pure. Therefore, people coming from those groups had to be rebaptized.

Stephen I of Rome took a different position on the issue of rebaptism, and this led to a disagreement between the bishops of Carthage and Rome.

Even after the death of Decius in 251 CE, Cyprian and the African church did not have peace and quiet. They were still in the midst of a plague, and rival bishops and their corresponding leadership structures defied Cyprian’s authority.
