They arrived at the house and Marty was enthusiastically greeted by Troy and the now ten-year-old twins. Beth, at sixteen, was more reserved and greeted him with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Caroline was radiant with joy that he was home safely and promised a proper welcome home later that night.
There was a note from Admiral Turner asking him to report as soon as he got home.
âHe can wait until tomorrow,â Marty said after he read it.
âGood job in Malta, we will take that from here,â Turner said.
âWhy did you recall me?â
âThe Prime Minister will explain when we see him in,â he looked at a new clock above his fireplace, âforty minutes. We will see him directly he finishes todayâs cabinet meeting.â
âNo hints?â
âI donât know what they have in mind, they are keeping this very quiet. He and Stewart will be coming here.â
âVery strange,â Marty said. One thing the prime minister didnât do was run around after his intelligence services.
The two men arrived and once everyone was settled around the table, Robert Jenkins started the proceedings.
âLord Stockley.â
Hello, thought Marty, not commodore?
âYou are familiar with India I believe as you served there with Wellington.â
âI am.â
âYou had dealings with the maharajas at the time.â
âQuite successfully,â Stewart added.
âI did have some success.â
âDid you know the East India Company is embarking on a war with the Maratha Empire?â
âNo, I didnât, but it was inevitable,â Marty said
âWhy is that?â Stewart asked.
âThe Company wants control of all trade in the sub-continent and the Maratha are the last major hold outs. They have consistently refused to bow to British rule.â
âDo you think they will be aided by an outside power?â
âAny of a dozen who donât want Britain to have control of India.â
Marty was beginning to think they were sending him back to do a similar job to the last time.
âWhat do you think of the Companyâs methods?â Jenkins said.
âThey can be a little heavy handed,â Marty said cautiously.
âThey can be more than that and that is one reason we want you to go out there.â
Marty said nothing, he knew there was more to come.
Stewart leaned forward, âWe want you out there as the Military Attaché, your job will be to find out if any of the major powers are aiding the Indians and to provide advice to John Company.â
âYou mean put an anchor on them.â
âLet us say, restrain their worst excesses.â
âWhat am I to do if I find out who is supporting them?â
âWhat you do best,â Stewart said.
âStop them,â Turner said
âWithout any traceable involvement by the British,â Jenkins added.
âI see. One more question. Why have this meeting here, not in your office?â
âBecause there are too many ears there who report back what is said to the Company. We donât want them to be forewarned as they would try and limit your access by lobbying. Once you are out there it will take months for any such restriction on your activities to be sent out,â Stewart said.
Marty pursed his lips in thought.
âWho is the current Governor General?â
âFrances Rawdon-Hastings, Marquess Hastings.
