They arrived at the house and Marty was enthusiastically greeted by Troy and the now ten-year-old twins. Beth, at sixteen, was more reserved and greeted him with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Caroline was radiant with joy that he was home safely and promised a proper welcome home later that night.

There was a note from Admiral Turner asking him to report as soon as he got home.

“He can wait until tomorrow,” Marty said after he read it.

“Good job in Malta, we will take that from here,” Turner said.

“Why did you recall me?”

“The Prime Minister will explain when we see him in,” he looked at a new clock above his fireplace, “forty minutes. We will see him directly he finishes today’s cabinet meeting.”

“No hints?”

“I don’t know what they have in mind, they are keeping this very quiet. He and Stewart will be coming here.”

“Very strange,” Marty said. One thing the prime minister didn’t do was run around after his intelligence services.

The two men arrived and once everyone was settled around the table, Robert Jenkins started the proceedings.

“Lord Stockley.”

Hello, thought Marty, not commodore?

“You are familiar with India I believe as you served there with Wellington.”

“I am.”

“You had dealings with the maharajas at the time.”

“Quite successfully,” Stewart added.

“I did have some success.”

“Did you know the East India Company is embarking on a war with the Maratha Empire?”

“No, I didn’t, but it was inevitable,” Marty said

“Why is that?” Stewart asked.

“The Company wants control of all trade in the sub-continent and the Maratha are the last major hold outs. They have consistently refused to bow to British rule.”

“Do you think they will be aided by an outside power?”

“Any of a dozen who don’t want Britain to have control of India.”

Marty was beginning to think they were sending him back to do a similar job to the last time.

“What do you think of the Company’s methods?” Jenkins said.

“They can be a little heavy handed,” Marty said cautiously.

“They can be more than that and that is one reason we want you to go out there.”

Marty said nothing, he knew there was more to come.

Stewart leaned forward, “We want you out there as the Military Attaché, your job will be to find out if any of the major powers are aiding the Indians and to provide advice to John Company.”

“You mean put an anchor on them.”

“Let us say, restrain their worst excesses.”

“What am I to do if I find out who is supporting them?”

“What you do best,” Stewart said.

“Stop them,” Turner said

“Without any traceable involvement by the British,” Jenkins added.

“I see. One more question. Why have this meeting here, not in your office?”

“Because there are too many ears there who report back what is said to the Company. We don’t want them to be forewarned as they would try and limit your access by lobbying. Once you are out there it will take months for any such restriction on your activities to be sent out,” Stewart said.

Marty pursed his lips in thought.

“Who is the current Governor General?”

“Frances Rawdon-Hastings, Marquess Hastings.
