Chapter Seventeen
Jazz led the girls through the kitchen and out onto the deck. Below them, on the beach, the firepit was blazing, casting dancing shadows on the pebbles. Thankfully her parents had kept their word and were upstairs in their bedroom.
âWow, this place is amazing!â Allegra exclaimed, looking around. âYouâre so lucky to have your own beach.â
âI know,â Jazz replied. âCome on, letâs go down there.â
She led the girls onto the beach and they made their way over to the firepit. âHopefully this can become our regular meeting place,â she said, looking at the others shyly. âIâd love to share it with you.â
âI gladly accept that invitation!â Portia exclaimed.
âMe too,â Allegra agreed.
âAnd me,â Hope said quietly.
Jazz felt a tingle of relief. She so badly wanted them to like her. After the disaster at school they were the only thing stopping her from drowning in despair. She glanced at Hope, staring out across the water at the moon.
âThe moon looks epic tonight, doesnât it?â Jazz said, following her gaze.
âWhyâs it so orange?â Allegra asked.
âApparently itâs something to do with the atmosphere at this time of year,â Jazz replied. âI googled it earlier.â
âCool.â Allegra smiled.
Jazz picked up a flask. âAnyone want some hot chocolate?â The girls nodded and she poured it out. âI have marshmallows for toasting too.â
âAwesome!â Portia exclaimed.
Jazz handed out the toasting sticks. âSo, howâs everyoneâs week been?â
âCrap,â Allegra said instantly.
âReally?â Jazz looked at her, surprised. Allegra looked so perfect and graceful she imagined her gliding through life like a swan, everything around her effortlessly falling into place.
âWhat happened?â Portia asked.
âOh, my mumâs been a pain and ââ she glanced sideways at Hope â âI just have a few personal issues to deal with. How about you?â Allegra asked Jazz, seeming eager to change the subject. âIt sounded from your email like youâve had a pretty grim week.â
âDonât!â Jazz exclaimed. âI somehow managed to piss off the mean girls in my class and make it look as if I hate all Brits. I donât hate all Brits,â she quickly added, passing around the bag of marshmallows. âOnly the stuck-up ones.â
âYeah, well, youâll probably find a lot of them at Cedars.â Portia grinned.
âTell me about it. Howâs your week been?â
âOK.â Portiaâs smile faded. âI think I might have discovered a dog thatâs being abused, though.â
âWhat?â Jazz exclaimed. The other girls looked at Portia, clearly shocked.
âOn my way home from meeting you guys on Sunday I heard someone yelling at a dog in their back garden. I couldnât see if the dog was being physically abused but it was whimpering a lot, so Iâm keeping the garden under surveillance. If there is anything dodgy going on, Iâm going to hand their arses to the RSPCA.â
Jazz bit her lip to stop herself giggling. Portia might be tiny but she was clearly a bit of a spitfire. She turned to Hope. âHow about you, Hope. Howâs your week been?â
Before Hope could say a word, Allegraâs phone beeped. She looked at it and frowned. Hope was now also frowning â at Allegra.
