Pungent smoke percolated through the holes of a brass incense burner on the corner of the expansive desk. Seated together, Kendra, Vanessa, Warren, and Tanu watched Dectus pace back and forth, hands moving animatedly as he talked.
âYou four did very well in Stratos,â the giant said.
âWe got caught,â Kendra said.
âBut you returned with the map,â Dectus said. âAnd Madam Ladonna weighed you, taking the guesswork out of your motives.â
âYou got what you expected,â Warren said.
Dectus held up a finger. âI had to be sure about you. I hoped for this outcome. And not a moment too soon. The Perennial Storm has been spotted.â
âYouâre kidding,â Vanessa said.
âThe storm visits here every seven years, give or take a couple of weeks,â Dectus said.
âHow bad is the storm?â Kendra asked.
âItâs enchanted,â Tanu said. âThe storm roves the magical world, never ending, bringing torrential showers and brilliant displays of lightning.â
âI heard it hailed gold for a while on Isla del Dragón,â Warren said.
âLegends about the storm abound,â Dectus said. âWe know thunderbirds flock inside those tenebrous clouds. But, most important, we know the entrance to our Dragon Temple opens only when the Perennial Storm is present.â
âYou want us to go out in the Perennial Storm?â Vanessa asked.
âSounds about right,â Warren murmured.
âMy most trusted courier will bear you safely there,â Dectus said. âEven giants respect the Perennial Storm, but, in a pinch, we sky giants can brave any weather.â
âI heard at its peak there can be a thousand lightning strikes a minute,â Vanessa said.
âMaybe at the very heart of the storm,â Dectus said. âWe will insulate Bernosh and his passengers against lightning. The primary question is whether you will undertake the quest for the Harp of Ages.â
âWhat do you know about the guardians of the temple?â Warren asked.
âWe have no details,â Dectus said. âExpect three monsters or dragons of great renown.â
âHow do we open the door?â Tanu asked.
âYou will need to use the lightning key while the storm is raging,â Dectus said.
âYou have the key?â Tanu asked.
Dectus pointed at the map.
Kendra looked at the parchment. âPtolemy and the lightning key,â Kendra read, tapping the labeled spot.
âUse the map to find the lair of Ptolemy,â Dectus said. âTake the key from him.â
âWho is Ptolemy?â Kendra asked.
âA three-headed giant,â Warren said. âReally tough customer.â
âYou need not defeat him,â Dectus said. âYou just need the key.â
âPtolemy is notoriously unpredictable,â Vanessa said.
âAnd the Dragon Temple will be more perilous still,â Dectus said. âWill you make the attempt, or should I find other champions?â
âThe Harp of Ages puts dragons to sleep?â Kendra asked.
âBy the hundreds, provided they are within range,â Dectus said.
Kendra looked to Tanu. âWe have to stop Celebrant. But we also need to find Seth.â
âYou go after Seth,â Tanu said. âWarren, Vanessa, and I can chase down the Harp.â
âIf youâre going to the Dragon Temple, you need a dragon tamer,â Kendra said.
âWe have potions,â Tanu responded.
Kendra shook her head. âI donât think Seth wants to be found, but the satyrs can take Knox and Tess to look for him while we go after the Harp.
