INTRODUCE THE PEOPLE

When Hannah was two years old, our occupational therapist created a special picture book that contained snapshots of our relatives and closest friends. This book familiarized Hannah with individuals she might see at gatherings. Interestingly, that was not the book’s original intent. We made the book when Hannah was nonverbal and we were trying to get Hannah to use her voice—we thought she might point and say people’s names as we turned the pages of the book. It worked for that purpose; in fact, it led to her finally saying “Mommy.” Repurposing the book as a holiday de-stressor and preparation tool worked well. She walked in seeing cousins and aunts who weren’t once-a-year strangers but instead familiar faces she recognized right away.
