Chapter Twelve
THE pull started the moment Haddon rode out of the front gate.
No matter what Pip did, how she tried to distract herself, the pressure built with each passing moment.
And her uneasiness, her certainty that something was wrong, grew with it. And with every uncertain breath, the swirling chaotic storm of her magic rose closer to the surface.
To divert herself, Pip focused on her latest experiment. Using it to focus.
She was holding on with every fiber of her being. Holding back the rising panic threatening to take away her control. Trying to channel the surging power into something productive.
But the pile of dust scattered across her workbench proved that was impossible. The white powder was all that remained of the third crystal she'd destroyed in the short time since Haddon had left the manor.
In an attempt to distract herself, and make up for the lies and deception, Pip had turned her attention to the book still sitting where Haddon had dropped it. And the page that was supposed to walk her through creating a frost crystal of her own. If they were ever going to save Haddon's parents, they were going to need to understand the magic of the crystal. And learn what spell the Grey Enchantress had used to turn them to stone.
At the moment, however, both tasks seemed well beyond her abilities.
She considered, for a moment, the handful of dragon magic spell translations pushed to the edge of the table. With her own magic so contrary to the nature of dragon magic, she'd never been able to make those spells work. Now, though, through her bond with Haddon, she might have a different result from the incantations.
Somehow though, using her connection to Haddon's magic like that, without even telling him, felt wrong and invasive.
Pip sighed and moved away from the table. Continuing to work through spiraling distraction was just going to lead to more destruction.
Instead, she gave in, listening to the pull that drew her toward the window over the garden. And a perfect view of the track that disappeared into the forest on its meandering way toward the village.
Tired, and needing a moment to collect herself, Pip leaned her forehead against the cool glass and focused on taking deep, steadying breaths. Calming her nerves, she poured all her resources into the battle of magic and will raging inside her.
Which was why she felt Haddon's return before she ever saw him.
Between one heartbeat and the next the pressure stopped growing. And then, like someone had opened a valve, the release was fast and dizzying.
Before the relief faded, a sleek bronze shape sliced across the sky. As soon as she saw him, Pip knew something was wrong. The scaled body wobbled with every beat of his wings, rolling and dipping in the air as Haddon fought his way forward.
Terrified of what might happen to him, Pip needed to get closer to see him. To call to him. To bring him to her.
Without thought, she raced to the rickety ladder and up to the tower, shouting his name into the sky like a prayer.
