Chapter Twelve
They reached the edge of what appeared to be a large settlement. Rob wouldnât call it a city, at least nothing by what he heard described as a city before. It was situated out in what he would consider the middle of nowhere. It was almost as if the caravans ceased moving, all of them simply deciding to stop, ending here, leaving the wagons accumulating together. There was still no sign of why they gathered.
âWhat are they doing?â Serena whispered.
She had kept the hood of her cloak up, covering her hair, and Rob wondered how long it would be before someone recognized her. She could hide her hair and face, maybe even suppress the glowing, but every so often, she would glow more brightly, and he could easily see it. At night, when it was dark, he wondered if sheâd be able to suppress anything. Maybe everybody within the encampment would suddenly know she was there.
âTheyâre settling this place,â Griffin said. He frowned, sweeping his gaze around at the homes, along with what appeared to be paths working through the settlement.
There was organization, a structure, like somebody was keeping everything in line. There wouldnât be any way for the caravan to be so organized unless someone had taken charge of it. Out there where there were no other buildings, nothing but the caravans moving and the people turning this into a new settlement.
âTheyâre intending to stay out here?â
He frowned again. âI wouldâve expected them to,â he said. âThere isnât anything here. Or, there shouldnât be anything here,â he said.
âAre we still in the kingdom?â
âThat is something of a nebulous question,â Serena said.
âNo,â Griffin said more curtly.
âAre we, or arenât we?â
âWell, weâre in between,â she said. âWeâre nearing the Borderlands, which means this would technically still be a part of the kingdom, but thereâs no part of the kingdom that extends this far. Even the stone sect hadnât come out here, as you can see.â
âSomething changed, though,â Rob said.
The caravan behind them were slowing. They passed it at one point, and it gave Rob the opportunity to make sense of the way the sand was flowing, rippling underneath the wagons, and he couldnât tell if it was the creatures or if something else powered it. He suspected, given what Serena and Griffin had said, it was tied to some control over the sand itself, which meant the dragon heart, or even dragon mind, was the one controlling it. It was impressive, regardless. He had never imagined anything quite like it before. And not only that, but it was a sustained use of power, something that managed to carry them all away across the desertâs rocky terrain.
âWhat do you think this sect is going to do?â Griffin asked.
âProbably cause problems. Knowing them,â she went on. âThe sand sect has been a thorn in the side of the kingdom for many years. My mother doesnât like to talk badly about them, but they are uniquely powerful.â She sounded frustrated as she acknowledged that, though Rob wondered why.
