Chapter

Eleven

Classes were boring as usual, except for Draignis History. I soaked up every bit of information I could from that class, though little of it had to do with my family. The shadow dragons spent most of their history keeping to themselves and sticking to, well, the shadows.

Group training was also incredibly boring. There were a few students who hadn’t transitioned fully into a dragon. I was automatically grouped with them despite my years of extensive training with my dad.

The hours crept by, leaving my mind no choice but to focus on what was going on in Nashville. The fact that I had no clue what was happening was enough to drive me bonkers. Every time I tried to let off a little steam with my exercises, I was snapped at by one of Ambrosia’s teaching protégés. They clearly had no idea how to handle a student as advanced as me.

By the end of my day, I felt restless and frustrated. It was bad enough not being able to help on a real mission involving the lives of people I could easily consider becoming my friends one day.

Well, at least, Paris. Bastien didn’t speak much but I got a good vibe from him. I’ve always been good at reading people. I inherited that from my father.

“Talia!” Raven called me over from where he stood on the green, close to where the land dipped into the rich valley.

“Please tell me you’re going to challenge me with magic nonsense,” I pled as I jogged over.

“You know me too well,” his smirk nearly knocked the breath from my lungs. “But I think you’ll like what I have in mind.”

“Today has been so mind-numbingly dull that I will like whatever you do to me.” Realizing too late what I’ve said, I can’t do anything but blush and stutter like a moron.

“I will definitely keep that in mind,” he winked. “But I want to focus on your mage abilities today.”

“Really?” Embarrassment gave way to curiosity. “Can you do that?”

“I can try. I got you to change your hair blue, didn’t I?”

I connected the dots. “You want to work on my ability to change my appearance so I can help find the twins in Nashville.”

“Exactly,” he grins.

As much as I enjoyed knowing he had faith in me, the idea of going to Nashville on such an important mission without Raven made me feel uneasy.

“I don’t think I should go without you. You’re kind of my teacher, after all.”

“That’s why I want to work on this specific ability. I was up late reading about mage abilities and teaching tactics. It’s possible for you to change the appearance of others. It’s difficult, but possible.”

“If I can change myself, Ethan, and you we can all help find Paris and Bastien.”

“It’s like you’re a professional schemer.”

“That’s more or less what a spy is,” I grin back.

“How did you end up becoming a spy at sixteen? That seems young. That’s saying something coming from a child of war.”

“My dad had a spy agency.
