“The Owl contacted you?” Robert asked.

“This is what it’s about, isn’t it?” Redbeard looked as if he thought the guard was about to pull his gun and shoot him, and he hurried to finish. “He’s after you. It’s personal. You did something to him worse than you did to me, didn’t you?”

Before Robert could respond, Landers grabbed the phone. “You know the Owl?”

“No, but he knows me.” Redbeard stared at Robert. “And he said you’d pay me a visit.”

“What did he say, exactly?” Landers pressed on.

Redbeard shook his head and suddenly smiled. “McKenzie is about to get what he deserves. How’s it feel, shitbird? Hoo, hoo, hoo!”

Robert grabbed the phone from Landers. “You want Lacey to be happy, don’t you? Tell me exactly what he said.”

“You can’t protect my family from him,” Redbeard spluttered, his laughter turning to a shudder in a heartbeat. “He’s powerful. I could tell from his voice. He’s king of the darkness.”

Landers leaned in toward the mouthpiece. “How did he get in touch with you?”

His practiced interrogating voice drew an immediate response from Redbeard.

“I’m eating lunch and one of the goons pulls me from my gruel and drags me to a phone,” Redbeard explained. “It’s this buzzy outer-space voice telling me that McKenzie is coming, and if I wanted my daughter to stay alive I needed to tell you something.” Redbeard’s face had a sweaty sheen and he was shaking. “God, that voice. Same as the voice in my head that tells me to pull my eyes out.”

Robert’s mind went into overdrive.

How did the Owl know I’d come here?

I spent all morning in the ER taking care of his victims.

How could the Owl anticipate that I’d make the connection between them and Redbeard?

Something wasn’t adding up.

“And then you show up,” Redbeard said. “I couldn’t fucking believe it! And Landers, too? The two motherfuckers who sent me to this earthly hell, right in front of me.”

“What was the message?” Robert persisted.

Redbeard hung his head, as if he was trying not to cry.

“Time to go,” the security guard came over.

Landers stood up and spoke in his most authoritarian voice. “One more minute.”

The security guard nodded and walked back to his corner.

“What was the message?” Robert repeated.

Redbeard looked up and wiped his eyes. “The Owl said that after he’s done raping and torturing your girlfriend, he’s going to kill her and then go after you. If you don’t find him first, he’s going to find you. He’s going to torture you. But he’s not going to kill you. He’s going to turn you into a vegetable. He’s going to scoop out your eyes. He’s going to pierce your eardrums and slice out your tongue, and then he’s going to break every one of your bones.” Redbeard looked exhausted, worn down, barely alive himself. “He sounded like one sick motherfucker, man. Someone who makes me sound like an amateur.”

Robert felt sudden nausea. The room was whirling like one of those dizzying movie shots.

The Owl is always a step ahead of me.
