Chapter 10

The rich aroma of coffee enveloped us as Alex and I sat across from each other in the booth by the window. I cradled my cup, savoring the warmth while watching pedestrians hurry along the sidewalk outside.

"Well, look at that," Alex remarked, nodding towards a man at the next table reading a newspaper. I craned my neck and immediately spotted the bold headline: "Victoria Langston's Ruthless Rise to Riches Exposed."

I raised my eyebrows in surprise. Alex noticed my expression and slid the paper over. "Looks like someone did some digging into her past," he says.

I scanned the article detailing Victoria's history of dubious land acquisitions, corporate sabotage, and exploitation on her way up the financial ladder. "This definitely paints Victoria in a different light," I mused. "Making her fortune by crushing competition without mercy."

"And likely just the tip of the iceberg," Alex speculated, steepling his fingers in thought. "Makes you wonder what else she could be mixed up in now."

I nodded slowly, thinking of the questionable international activity we had observed at GlobalTech. "This seems far too timely to be a coincidence..."

Alex agreed, his detective instincts clearly buzzing with theories about Victoria's motives and connections. I flicked through the rest of the paper, but my mind kept drifting back to the hard-hitting exposé.

"You know what this means, right?" I said, looking up at Alex.

Alex nodded in agreement. "Good idea. Let's give him a call."

I pulled out my phone and called the newspaper where Jasper Jenkins published the article. After a short introduction, they immediately connected me with him. When he answered, I hit speakerphone so Alex could listen in, too.

"Mr. Jenkins? This is Jane Mitchell and Alex Carter. We wanted to congratulate you on your excellent reporting on Victoria Langston's past."

"Ah yes, thank you," Jasper replied enthusiastically. "As I mentioned in the article, that's really just scratching the surface of her questionable financial maneuvers over the years."

"Oh really?" I asked, exchanging an intrigued look with Alex. "We'd be curious to hear more about what else you've uncovered through your investigations."

"Well, I likely shouldn't reveal too many details," Jasper said cautiously. "But let's just say the word is that Victoria's shady dealings didn't end in the past. There are rumors of much more recent things, including potential money funneling between her organization and big companies like GlobalTech via shell corporations overseas."

"Fascinating," I replied, watching Alex's eyes light up at this new lead. "Anything else you can share about these...rumors?"

"Unfortunately, not yet, as I'm still digging for concrete evidence," Jasper admitted. "But I suspect Ms. Langston may have her hands in far more than even this article exposes."

"Understandably, you can't reveal your confidential sources," I said. "But do you actually have much evidence to back
