I had been trained in espionage by one of the best, my mentor Silence. Unlike him, my avatar was not meant for crawling through walls and going unnoticed. People tended to notice an octopus in their house. However, my avatar did grant me many useful abilities for spying on others, even while in my human form.

I’d done some preliminary scouting last night after we’d arrived, mainly trying to narrow down potential locations to search more in depth. Even that had been a challenge, though. The palace was too immense to search quickly, but I had found a few places of interest. Then I’d returned to our room for some sleep before heading out again this afternoon. With my ability to cling to walls I could move freely along the outside of the palace and go where I pleased. It was getting on to evening now and I’d learned a lot, though I wasn’t sure how much of it was useful.

You never know what might be useful, Ulio, my Lumani, noted. I bet you never thought your nipples would be useful as a man, but you sure like it when Roo sucks on them.

Now is not the time, I chided him.

Ulio was not the most useful Lumani. We’d Bonded because we were both… quirky. Only much later had I found out how truly odd Ulio was. Now, I ignored him most of the time.

I heard that. Maybe I’ll ignore you too!

He harrumphed, seeing how that had backfired on him.

Two palace guards were walking past me. I had pressed myself back into the shadow of one of the pillars which lined the long hallway. I could make myself blend in with my surroundings and these shadows helped to hide me. Neither guard noticed me.

Once the hall was clear, I padded softly to the next door and listened at it for a long moment.

Nothing.

Then came the unnerving part. I semi-liquified myself to slip under the door. Between my avatar’s ability to squish through tight spaces, and my spirit-gift of physical manipulation I could fit through almost any opening. But while I did, I lost all but my sense of touch. Once I reformed on the other side, I saw another empty room.

This looked to be an office of some sort. I quickly went to the large desk and began riffling through the books and parchment I found. Most were ledgers and tallies. It took me a long moment of looking at them to figure out these were lists of slaves. At first, I thought these to be all the slaves within the empire, but I soon discovered that these were just the slaves within the palace. There were thousands — perhaps tens of thousands — of people enslaved here! I felt sick at the very thought.

Everything about his place, the city of Thraan and the palace, just felt wrong. I understood entirely what Lyran was talking about now. Everything and everyone here was heartless, soulless, devoid of caring or love. They lived for pleasure and wealth and power and that was it.
