CAL EXITED the tube station at Earls Court and walked slowly towards the hotel. She would be there now. He felt apprehensive, on edge. It was a feeling that seemed to have come from nowhere. The last 48 hours had been intense. He found her in the bar, nursing a glass of wine.

‘Good trip?’ he said, slumping down opposite her with a soft drink. ‘No issues?’

She smiled at him. ‘No problems at all. Glad to see you, though. And you?’

‘I’ve been back to CB’s offices. And guess what?’

Her blonde hair was tied in the familiar ponytail and she had recently applied fresh eyeliner. She sipped her wine, eyeing him over the rim of the glass.

‘Your professor friend was a guest. He was on the list that night. My hunch was correct.’

She looked shocked.

‘I don’t believe it! How did I miss him? Are we sure he showed up?’

‘No way of knowing.’

‘Because he didn’t mention anything when I saw him.’

‘Which proves he had something to hide, right?’

She picked up her phone. ‘So let’s call him. Arrange a time to meet tomorrow.’

He laid a hand on her arm.

‘Not so fast.’

‘Why not?’

‘It might spook him.’

‘But surely if I explain?’

‘Better face to face. Besides, he could be under surveillance. We need to approach him carefully. What if his phone’s bugged?’

She looked sceptical. ‘You think so?’

‘Considering everything else that has happened, I’d say it was a high likelihood, wouldn’t you?’

She put the phone down.

‘Maybe you’re right.’ She paused to take another slug of her wine, and a thought struck her. ‘Hang on. If he was there, perhaps it was him who was faxing me those documents? After the chemists were murdered?’

‘There were more of them?’

‘Yes, didn’t I tell you? The chemists handed a folder over to Kate on the boat, but he would have assumed she’d been killed. So afterwards, he starts sending them to me.’

‘What sort of documents?’

‘Newspaper cuttings, mostly. Stories about people who had taken their own lives after being medicated by doctors. All in East Africa as far as I could make out.’ She paused. ‘He’d certainly know where to find me. And that fax machine of Dad’s - it had to be someone who knew he had one.’

‘Sofie! For fuck’s sake, why didn’t you mention this before? It’s like I’m trying to help you with one hand tied behind my back! I need to know everything! Got it?’

She looked sheepish.

‘Anything else you’re hiding?’

‘Sorry. Should have mentioned them before. They didn’t mean much to me.’

‘So what did you do with them?’

‘I’ve no idea.’

He raised a sceptical eyebrow at her.

‘Honestly.’ She hesitated. ‘Though I still don’t get why he gave me no indication of this when I met up with him.’

‘To protect himself, of course. He’d already sent you the list that Frank and I found when we broke into to your flat. That was all he needed to do.’ He paused. ‘And because you never actually received it, you never thought to mention it to him, did you? If you had, you would have wanted his expertise to help you decipher it.
