FORTY-NINE

Stephanie had had a frustrating morning. Progress on all fronts seemed to be slow, so while she waited for Quinn Asher to arrive, she decided to put together a plan to look into Lola’s life in Shropshire in more detail. Had someone followed her here to Cornwall – a boyfriend, perhaps? It seemed clear there was something they hadn’t been told at the time of her disappearance, so she picked up her phone.

Her call to Nancy was answered quickly, but the woman seemed out of breath.

‘It’s Stephanie King. Are you okay, Nancy?’ she asked.

‘Yes, I’m fine,’ Nancy gasped.

‘Sorry if I’ve disturbed you. Are you out for a run?’

There was a squeak of a laugh down the phone. ‘No, that’s not my thing. I’m just walking quickly.’

She sounded nervous. ‘Is everything all right?’ Stephanie asked.

There was a momentary pause. ‘Yes – it’s fine. Have you discovered anything about Lola?’

Whatever was bothering Nancy at that moment, she didn’t seem inclined to say, so Stephanie ploughed ahead with the questions.

‘I’m going to speak to the school tomorrow, and I wondered if she used to belong to any clubs – a church, a sports club – anything outside of school.’

Nancy was still panting as if she was rushing, and perhaps this wasn’t the best time for the conversation.

‘Would it be easier if I came out to see you later, Nancy? You seem in a hurry and it’s not urgent.’

‘No, it’s fine. There isn’t anything that I know of.’

There was a pause, and Stephanie waited to hear if she said more. All she heard was a gasp, and a muttered ‘Shit! Sorry, I’ve got to go.’

The line went dead. Stephanie stared at the silent phone. Something was clearly wrong. She decided to send a text. Nancy – I’m worried about you. You sounded stressed. Do you need some help? Please let me know you’re okay.

She pressed send and waited. Nothing. No response.

Her desk phone rang, and she reached for it without taking her eyes off her mobile.

‘Sarge, Quinn Asher’s here. Shall I put her in an interview room?’ There was a pause. ‘Sarge?’

‘Sorry! Yes, I’ll be down in a couple of minutes.’

There was nothing more she could do for Nancy right now, but Stephanie hoped she would respond soon.
