FORTY-NINE
Stephanie had had a frustrating morning. Progress on all fronts seemed to be slow, so while she waited for Quinn Asher to arrive, she decided to put together a plan to look into Lolaâs life in Shropshire in more detail. Had someone followed her here to Cornwall â a boyfriend, perhaps? It seemed clear there was something they hadnât been told at the time of her disappearance, so she picked up her phone.
Her call to Nancy was answered quickly, but the woman seemed out of breath.
âItâs Stephanie King. Are you okay, Nancy?â she asked.
âYes, Iâm fine,â Nancy gasped.
âSorry if Iâve disturbed you. Are you out for a run?â
There was a squeak of a laugh down the phone. âNo, thatâs not my thing. Iâm just walking quickly.â
She sounded nervous. âIs everything all right?â Stephanie asked.
There was a momentary pause. âYes â itâs fine. Have you discovered anything about Lola?â
Whatever was bothering Nancy at that moment, she didnât seem inclined to say, so Stephanie ploughed ahead with the questions.
âIâm going to speak to the school tomorrow, and I wondered if she used to belong to any clubs â a church, a sports club â anything outside of school.â
Nancy was still panting as if she was rushing, and perhaps this wasnât the best time for the conversation.
âWould it be easier if I came out to see you later, Nancy? You seem in a hurry and itâs not urgent.â
âNo, itâs fine. There isnât anything that I know of.â
There was a pause, and Stephanie waited to hear if she said more. All she heard was a gasp, and a muttered âShit! Sorry, Iâve got to go.â
The line went dead. Stephanie stared at the silent phone. Something was clearly wrong. She decided to send a text. Nancy â Iâm worried about you. You sounded stressed. Do you need some help? Please let me know youâre okay.
She pressed send and waited. Nothing. No response.
Her desk phone rang, and she reached for it without taking her eyes off her mobile.
âSarge, Quinn Asherâs here. Shall I put her in an interview room?â There was a pause. âSarge?â
âSorry! Yes, Iâll be down in a couple of minutes.â
There was nothing more she could do for Nancy right now, but Stephanie hoped she would respond soon.
