THE CHAPTER WHERE MOTHERS DO THEIR BRAND OF MOTHERING

THE DUMMY

Last night felt like a dream. Butch and the kids helped me in the kitchen while I made fried battered fish, popcorn shrimp, and crinkle-cut fries like we get at Long John Silver’s. When we listened to music, Butch stood still while we danced around him.

After dinner, we made the most of the mild spring evening. The kids played “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park.” Butch never seemed bored watching them—or me. I admittedly ran around plenty in the yard we share with Lily and Dash. They joined us for only a short time. Lily’s ankles were swollen, and she looked angry at the world. When I talked to her, though, she was in the best mood.

“Mom and Pop are visiting next weekend,” she whispered. “I miss them.”

Then she cried because she’s hormonal and everything makes her cry. I cried too because I don’t need much to get going. Hart looked worried when he saw us, but Dash whispered something to him. Whatever it was, my baby decided all was good, and he went back to playing.

The evening ended with bath time in the clawfoot tub Butch installed months ago. He smiled when I reminded him of how much he did to make our home beautiful. Butch might not like being put on the spot, but he’s a fan of praise.

The night ended with Butch and me in bed. Sex wasn’t as fun with my kiddos next door. I wasn’t sure how loud I was being, so I kept covering my mouth and trying to muffle every bed creak. Butch didn’t say anything about my anxieties or how much trouble I had sleeping in the bed rather than my spot on the couch where I could check on my babies.

As tense as I was last night, I woke up in a great mood this morning. Butch’s expression when he sleeps was something out of a dream. He looked so peaceful without worrying about people bothering him.

The kids weren’t too bothered by Butch joining us for breakfast. As usual, Haydee wasn’t chatty in the morning while Hart was barely awake. Butch stared at his coffee as if willing it into his mouth. I watched them, only remembering to eat when my mouth opened to yawn. We’re clearly not morning people.

After I drop off my kiddos at school, I meet Cheryl for a cup of coffee. Butch thinks I’m at work. I didn’t lie to him, but I let him believe a lie. My stomach hurts from not telling the truth. He won’t understand, though. Just like Lily and Dash, he’ll want to protect me so much that he won’t let me decide on my own.

Cheryl is already at the Bean Hut when I arrive. She looks pretty this morning with her hair tied up in a ponytail. I walk over to her, unsure if I should hug her or shake her hand or just nod a hello.

My confidence is higher since things got fixed with Butch.
