Hsien

These most plentiful creatures are capable of making themselves invisible to the human eye. More troubling, they may alter their form to any shape they wish, and are known to take on the appearance of an unsuspecting victim’s beloved. While their chief aim seems to be to sow confusion and anger, they are reputed to be quite vicious if they are confronted and their antics revealed. A man I met in Cuandixia, an ancient mountain village in China, told a harrowing tale of one of the Hsien adopting the appearance of his wife in order to make him believe the woman was engaging in intimacy with another man. But when the man and his wife turned the tables on the Hsien—that good, maligned woman hiding while her doppelganger continued its ruse, and then leaping out to prove her innocence, face to face with the Hsien—it attacked her so savagely that she suffered disfiguring wounds. Both she and her husband, however, report being able to see for just a moment the actual form of the Hsien—an inhumanly slender crone with wisps of hair, three hooked fingers, and skin like dried, cracked red clay.
