The next morning, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport…

“This is a boarding call for Star Airlines, flight 386, leaving for New York City. Please proceed to gate C18 for boarding purposes.”

“About time,” Xia mumbled as the announcement prodded her to gather her carry-on bag. The news report on the television drew her attention, freezing her in place. “Fucking hell! I didn’t expect them to act this quickly.”

“Unconfirmed reports indicate the esteemed businessman, Torin Caruso, and his cousin, Matteo Caruso, the owner of the Seattle Sharks, have been incarcerated under suspicion of mafia involvement, money laundering, and tax evasion. According to an FBI informant, the Bureau has concrete proof that irrespective of previous denials, the two men are indeed linked to the criminal mafia organization their great-grandfather, Luca Caruso, brought to life in the early 1900s. Apparently, the uncovering of an operation hub beneath the Global Restaurant Depot, Torin Caruso’s business, is linked to the National Crime Syndicate, Kings Inc. Torin Caruso’s preliminary federal court hearing was held early this morning. He was denied bail and is being held at an undisclosed federal holding facility pending his trial. Matteo Caruso, however, was released on a technicality.”

“Hot damn! I did it. I really did it.” Xia heard the awe in her voice echoing back to her. Instead of handing over the information to her father, she had reached out to their FBI contact directly and told him about the bunker and how to access it. Her ruse had paid off. Angelo Scillato couldn’t take credit for bringing down the Carusos. It was all her.

Now, no one at the ECM could dispute her ability to set goals everyone believed were unachievable and carried them through. She had what it took to rule. Nothing and no one would stop her, particularly since she still had the file with further information to ensure the Carusos were sunk for good. A trump card she would hold on to and play if needed.

Nothing? Not even your heart?

My heart is fine, thank you.

Xia scoffed silently at her psyche as she made her way to the boarding gate. She had effectively shut out thinking about Brendan since arriving home last night, and for her own sanity, that was how it was going to stay.

More than fine. I’m going home.

Hmm, have you told your mother yet about your big plans, Comare? Or does she still believe this mafia spiel was just an interim game to keep your father happy? You do realize she expects you to take over the Silver Flair Modeling Agency from her?

Shut up! Just fucking shut up. I’m sick and tired of your interference.

Good luck shutting me up. You’re the one keeping me alive, bitch. And that ain’t never gonna change.

Clamping her lips together, Xia ignored the mocking voice in her mind and settled in her first-class seat.

Since she hardly managed any sleep the previous night, she closed her eyes, still riding high on the wave of her success. Over the past six years, she had set out to prove herself in the male-dominated mafia world, and she had done it.
