Jack sat in the easy chair in Emma’s hospital room while she napped. She’d had a full day, two breathing treatments, physical therapy, visits from several doctors, and talks with her dad about what had happened at home. She was worn out. Tomorrow they would meet with a social worker and a chaplain. An exhausted Jack was pleased with her progress, both physically and emotionally. Picking up the remote, he turned on the national news.

“The events in the United States over the weekend have industrialized nations around the world reeling. The common concern: ‘If it can happen there, what’s the risk of a similar event happening in our country?’ The world’s financial institutions have reacted as expected. Our stock markets, closed today, are expected to reopen tomorrow. China’s Shanghai Composite dropped more than 30%. Japan’s NIKKEI 225 Index is off 1,468 points or 43%. The German Stock Index, DAX, ended at its lowest point since unification. Panic over recession, depression, and collapse is rampant,” the CNN anchor said.

Analysts expect the metal’s price to double from current levels.

“Expect to see increased prices at the grocery store due to hikes in transportation and fuel costs as many of our fruits and vegetables are transported from Imperial Valley in Southern California or imported from Mexico and Central and South America. The price for beef, pork, mutton, and fish will see seasonal variations with a slight bump upward for transportation. Wheat, corn, and soybean production is centered in the Great Plains states and will have to be trucked to market.”

For the first time in days, Jack thought about something other than his immediate here and now. What’s going to happen to Agnew? Where’s Emma going to go to school? Maybe we’ll move. Not many left to work the farms. The Ship Channel attack will impact the state’s economy. How’s that going to impact maintaining my equipment? Stop it! Just watch the news.

“We invite you to tune in tonight for a special report on the economic impact of this attack. The massive loss of life combined with the many states and millions of people without water or power has changed the course of our country’s history forever. The economy, ours and the world’s, has many asking if this event has moved us past a theoretical tripwire of debt to
