Avery

BLOWING OUT A DEEP breath, I head in the direction of where Chad works. I want to apologize for my brother’s behavior. Logan told me how he flipped shit after I passed out.

“Knock, knock.” Tapping on the wall of Chad’s cubicle, I give him a sad smile.

“Oh, hey.” He glances around nervously.

“I'm sorry about Owen... Luke and Parker too. They’ll calm down. They have no say in who I spend time with.”

“Listen, Avery... I like you, you seem cool, but I can't lose this job.”

“You won’t! They can't fire you for being friends with me.”

“Well, your brother said to stay away or I’ll lose my job. I can't risk that. Parker and Lucas made it very clear I’m supposed to stay away too.”

“Are you kidding me? I own a quarter of this company, same as them.” My hands go to my hips, anger coursing through my body.

This is like high school all over again. The nice guys always kept their distance because of my scary brother and his friends. When are they going to leave me alone and let me live the life I want to live?

Maybe coming here was the wrong move. Maybe I should stay a silent partner and start my own company.

“I'm fairly certain Mr. Scott and Mr. Coleman will take Mr. Powell’s side, not yours.” He shrugs a shoulder like there's nothing more that he can do.

"So, this is over before it even had a chance to start?”

“I'm sorry. I can't risk it.”

“No, I get it. I'm never going to be enough for anyone,” I mutter under my breath. “Stay away from them. They all hold grudges like no one else and now you’re on their radar. You’ve hit on every woman important to them. Watch your back.”

Without another word I make my way to my new office. I need some space and some time away from the boys.

Dropping into my chair, I spin in slow circles with my eyes closed. Pulling my knees up to my chest, I rest my feet on the seat so I can spin faster. Pushing off with the help of my desk, I spin a few times before reaching out to do it again.

“What’s wrong, Av?” Owen’s voice floats from the doorway.

“Nothing,” I mumble, spinning even faster.

“You’re lying. You’ve been doing this since you were little. I’ll never forget how you used to hide in dad’s office and spin in his chair every time something was bothering you. I’m gonna figure it out, you might as well just tell me.” His voice softens more than normal.

“Am I ever going to be enough?” I whisper.

The pang in my chest grows. What if I’m not? What if I'm never enough for a guy to put me first?

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Am I ever going to be enough for a guy to take a chance on me? To put me above everything else in their life?”

“Yes... And if you can't find that guy, don’t settle for someone less. You wait for someone who treats you like you’re their entire universe, not just someone to share a bed with.
