Trina calls me and invites me over for a girls’ night barbecue at her house the next evening. This is my life now. Less than a month as a permanent resident, and I’m already on the weeknight barbecue invitation list. While our food is grilling, I end up telling them all—Trina, Candice, Lily, Simone, Fiona, and Jen—that I just put an offer in on a house.

Squeals and cheers erupt, and a bottle of champagne appears from out of thin air.

I laugh. “It hasn’t been accepted yet,” I protest. “The owners haven’t even responded.”

“But you’re doing it!” Simone claps me on the back and fills my glass. “Where’s the house? What’s it like? Show us pictures!”

My insides are effervescent. I’m full of light and laughter as I pull up photos to show the girls, and we all jump when my phone starts ringing.

“It’s Rudy,” I breathe.

Lily grins at me. “First of all, tell him I’m mad at him for not telling me this as soon as he got home. Secondly, answer the phone!”

I swipe to answer and put the phone to my ear. “Hello?”

“Nora,” Rudy says. “I heard back from the owners.”

My heart thumps. “Oh?”

“They have a counteroffer. Do you have time to go through it tonight?”

“Sure,” I answer, then glance at Trina. She gives me a thumbs-up. “I’m at Trina Viceroy’s place.”

“I’ll be over in a few.”

We hang up, and I let out a breath. “He’s coming over.”

“Just this once,” Fiona proclaims, “we will allow a man to intrude on our sacred girls’ barbecue night.”

Simone laughs and from just over her shoulder, a baby starts crying. Lily is there in an instant, picking her son up from his carrier to cradle him in her arms. She kisses Liam’s forehead. “You’re hungry, aren’t you?”

“I’ll warm the formula,” Candice says. “You go get settled in the rocking chair.”

Lily does exactly that, and we force ourselves to quiet down a bit—until the doorbell rings.

“That must be Rudy.” I head to the front door and open it to see Rudy on the stoop.

He smiles at me. “Am I allowed to come in?”

“Special exemption,” Simone says from behind me.

Grinning, I pull the door open wider. We head to the dining room, which has pocket doors that can be pulled closed. Rudy spreads out some paperwork on the table and goes over it with me.

“They want the full asking price,” he says, “but they’re fine with having conditions on the financing and inspections. They were happy to settle quickly.” He meets my gaze. “We can go back to them and try to knock off a couple of grand, but I get a feeling they’ll hold firm on the price.”

I blow out a breath. The asking price is high. I’ve been pre-approved for that amount by the bank, but it still means that until I’m done paying off the motorcycle debt, things will be tighter than I’m comfortable with. I won’t have much of a buffer. And even with the pre-approval, it doesn’t mean the bank will come through with the financing.
