Chapter Thirteen

Saturday, April 13th.

One Observation Circle. D.C.

Not quite believing Annie was there in his house in D.C., Lee rolled over and pulled her naked body close to his. “How did I get so lucky?” he whispered. “No matter how much I wanted it, I never believed this could happen.”

“There are pressing things that we both need to get done,” said Annie. “Laws that need to be changed for the good of everyone in this country, and having you behind the wheel is going to help get ‘er done.”

“I hope you’re right about me winning the election, Annie. There’s a long road ahead of us before that happens.”

“You’ll shine in the primaries. I’m sure of it. Nobody will be able to touch you. Are all of your funds in place?”

“Yes. I have solid backing, and a campaign manager has been hired. Warren recommended Claudia Belmont to drive the Armstrong train and she’s been making plans for the past month.”

“Don’t know her, sugar, but I don’t have to. You’re the one who will have to follow orders. Won’t be this girl.”

Annie got out of bed and Lee couldn’t take his eyes off her as she crossed the room naked to the ensuite.

I need to buy her a ring. I want her to be wearing an engagement ring in Milwaukee.

When she came out of the bathroom with a white towel wrapped around her, Lee said, “I want you to wear my ring in Milwaukee.”

“Okay. I have lots of rings I can wear. You don’t have to buy me another one. I’m not sure we’ll ever get as far as the altar, sugar.”

“I realize that, but it’s what I want so badly.”

“Marriage has never worked out for me, sugar pop, and I don’t want to fall down that groundhog hole again.”

“Did you mean a rabbit hole?”

“No. We both know the score, sugar pop. I’m a Texan, and I’m not going to live in a place all jammed up with crooked politicians, parties for show hosted by bitchy wives, bribery, corruption, scandal and…gridlock.”

“Wow, I’ve never thought of D.C. like that, sweetheart. Humor me. Let me believe there’s a possibility that you’ll change your mind.”

“Don’t do that to yourself, Lee. Just don’t. When it doesn’t happen, you’ll be so sad. Best not to fool yourself from the get-go.”

Mick sat at the dining room table drinking coffee while he waited for Lee and Annie to come downstairs for breakfast.

Annie hugged him and sat down next to him. “Do you want to go to the convention in Milwaukee with me?”

“You’re going, ain’t you?”

“Have to,” said Annie.

“Then I have to go too.”

“We’ll have lots of security, Mick,” said Lee, “if you don’t want to make the trip.”

“Don’t want to be off the ranch, but that don’t mean shit, does it? I have to be where Annie is. It’s my fuckin job to make sure she doesn’t die on me.”

Lee nodded. “I understand. I wouldn’t want that to happen either. My worst nightmare.”

“Don’t think so.”

Annie smiled at Mick and sipped her coffee.
