There’s a single main device (TV or smart monitor) being complemented remotely by other devices, like the TV being controlled by the smartphone.

Those other devices (smartphone, tablet, PC) have a consistent design applied across all of them, enabling each one to be the controlling or second-screen device. In other words, consistency is used to provide multiple access points to the main complementary interaction.

In most cases, several devices can complement the main one at the same time, providing access for multiple actors to the main device. One main use case is social — enabling multiple people to engage in an activity as a group (either with all of them in the same room, or remotely). Another use case can be to simply share the experience with others — not necessarily synchronously. The Withings Smart Baby Monitor, for example, offers multiple account support, which allows parents, grandparents, and the nanny to all monitor the baby, each from their own device. In addition, access can be shared with family from afar, giving them the opportunity to see the baby more often.
