Chapter Twelve
MELANY
âYou just got back, and youâre already planning on leaving again?â Lucian shook his head, concern gleaming in his eyes.
âI plan on sleeping first.â
Jasmine gave me a look. âYouâre not going on your own this time, Mel. We are going with you. Iâm getting tired of you disappearing without a trace. One time it will be for good, and I wonât be able to handle that.â
âHonestly, I was hoping you would say that,â I admitted with a chuckle. âBecause I have no idea how to get into Tartarus.â
âIâm pretty sure Prometheus is the only one with a key,â Lucian added.
âThen weâll have to find a way to steal the key.â
Ren snorted. âIâd love to just have one year at the academy where we arenât facing grave danger and doing something we shouldnât be doing. Like, canât we just be cool professors and revel in all the perks?â
I patted him on the shoulder. âYeah, but where would the fun be in that?â
âAnd what perks are you getting?â Jasmine asked.
Yet, not everyone looked enthused about the possibility of another dangerous adventure. Georgina had yet to say anything. She wouldnât even meet my gaze.
âGina?â I reached across the table to touch her hand. âWhatâs going on?â
âI was kind of hoping that when I got my earth powers again, my arm would somehow magically grow back.â She shook her head. âIt was a stupid thing to assume.â
My chest constricted with her words. âI may not be able to help you grow your arm back, but I do have the next best thing.â
Giving me a weird look, she scrunched her nose. âIâm almost scared to ask.â
After we finished eating, I led everyone down the stone stairs to the forge. If Iâd been gone over a week, that shouldâve been enough time for Hephaistos to make the mechanical arm that Iâd commissioned for Georgina. Cassandra tried to get out of it, saying she didnât belong, but I grabbed her arm and told her she was one of us now, and she needed to accept it whether she liked it or not.
That made Jasmine snort laugh.
When we stepped through the open metal door, voices carried down from one of the upper platforms and we halted, pressing our backs against one of the large stone walls near the lower forge.
âYou are crazy to think I have any control over her whatsoever.â Hephaistosâs voice seemed stressed, and I wondered which âherâ he was talking about.
âWell, you need to do something before she destroys it all.â The second voice was a huge surprise. It belonged to Hera, the Goddess of the Stars, and Zeusâs long-suffering wife.
Now I was really curious as to who the âherâ they were discussing was. Was it Aphrodite? Was it me? Also, what was the âitâ in the equation? The plot to resurrect Zeus? Fixing fate and time?
âAnd do it before I do.â
âI donât do well with threats, Hera. They make my skin itchy.â
âWho do you think sheâs talking about?â I whispered, glancing at the others.
