Chapter 14

Something about Aeden changes as we climb the embankment of the island. His shoulders relax and his face loses the tension he’s always held there. His violet eyes sparkle just a bit.

“What is this place to you?” I slip as a light rain dusts the area.

He looks back at me with a slight smile. “You’ll see.”

I’m not even sure how to take that. He just made me swim across a life or death situation, and I’m pretty fucking sure that was a kraken in the water stalking me. This mortal thing is bullshit. It’s making me too cautious. With immortality on my side, I’d feel a little more confident, willing to take on the mythical beasts of this world.

I take another step and magic slides over me like a warm embrace. I shudder from the feel of it as it cascades over my senses. Sinking into my bones and invigorating me with renewed energy. I blow out a breath and release the tension I’ve been holding.

My eyes peer off behind me into the distance in the direction we swam from. A heavy fog lies a mile from shore, preventing us from seeing anything beyond. A splash catches my eye where tentacles rise into the night sky, reaching for the stars that flicker just beyond.

I step back through the shield, and again that fine mist sprays and now the shoreline becomes visible once more. I shake my head of the weirdness that swallows me and walk through the shield.

My perspective changes again as I take in the entire island. Where a light house should sit is now a large tree. In a full circle around the tree is a small castle-like structure. Completely rounded with two stories, sitting off to the side of the island.

Ancient looking trees dot the landscape, framing the tree protected by the stone building. Their roots are gnarled and full of vines. They remind me of a magical tree that belongs to a mouse in the mortal world.

“Where are we?” I can’t hide the awe in my voice. Nor can I ignore the complete respect this place demands. I get the feeling it’s a true honor to even walk through that shield.

I startle as lampposts flicker with light, and even those are completely created of nature. Large stones appear as a pathway leads us toward the main building.

Ignoring my question, Aeden slings his fish over a shoulder and begins to walk. “Looks like they’ve been expecting us.”

Is he smiling? Like a full-blown smile. We must be in some weird twilight zone. Feeling more off than I’ve ever felt in my entire life, I follow the path, my eyes marveling at the magical island before me.

I knew there were places on Earth where the space between Earth and the Realm grew thin, allowing for pockets like this. But all of that changed with the fall. Yet somehow this place holds the feeling of the Realm without existing in the Realm—or Earth for that matter.

I’m not sure where I am, but I’m sure as hell not on Earth anymore.
