Before he returned to the Bay Area, Stone took a detour to London and stopped by the magical library to visit his friend Eddie Monkton.
âNot a social call, I take it?â Eddie said when he got a look at Stoneâs expression.
âNot this time, Iâm afraid.â
âWell, come on in, then. Iâve got tea on.â
Stone didnât partake of the tea, but he did give Eddie a complete rundown of everything that had happened over the last few days, starting with the museum collapse and ending with his conversation with Mary Reeves.
His friend listened with growing astonishment. âBloody âell,â he said when Stone finished. âIâd never have guessed magic âad anything to do with what happened in New York. And you think thereâs somebody out there who can put up temporary portals at will? I didnât think that was possible.â
âNor did I. That was one of the other things I wanted to ask youâwhether you might have heard rumors of such a person. But it sounds like you havenât.â
âNo way.â Eddie shook his head emphatically. âIf youâre right, they mustâve either discovered the ability very recently, or been keepinâ a very low profile.â
âYes, well, this whole thing is looking very much like something far bigger than I suspected is going on. After speaking to Dr. Reeves, Iâm convinced now that whoever stole this box didnât do it on his own. Somebody hired him.â
âWhy, though? You said the box didnât look interesting, and it didnât âave anything inside it. If thatâs all the bloke stoleââ
Stone held up a hand. âI said the mundanes didnât find anything inside it. You know as well as I do that doesnât necessarily mean nothing was there.â
Eddieâs eyes widened. âYou think there was some kind oâ magical storage compartment in there.â
âPossibly. Or else thereâs something more interesting about those figures painted on the sidesâsomething that doesnât show up in a photograph.â Stone got up and began pacing. âDr. Reeves is going to send me her files on the itemâall the photos, information on where it was obtained, that sort of thing. If I send it along to you, could you do a bit of research and see if you can find out anything about it? Maybe if we knew where it came from, it might give us a better idea of what itâs used for.â
âAnd that, in turn, might suggest who might be after it,â Eddie finished, nodding. âYou got it, mate. Iâll ring up Ward and weâll get right on it.â
âThanks, Eddie. Iâll leave you to that part.â
âWhat part are you going to do?â
âIâm planning to hunt down the thief. Youâre right: somebody with an ability like that canât hide it foreverâespecially not now, after whatâs happened. Aside from that, Iâve got someone else I want to talk to about tracking the item much more actively. If Iâm lucky, maybe I can get you and Ward more to go on. Possibly even the item itself.â
âThat would âelp,â Eddie said. âGood luck, mate.â He shook his head ruefully. âAnd condolences on the loss of your friend.
