In the early hours of Monday morning, Tom lay naked in bed and clung to her. Friarâs Inn was quite generous even with its single beds, and his wiry build made up for her curves. There was plenty of room.
Becca let her fingers dance playfully across his chest. She had discovered at the start of proceedings that he was ticklish.
âWant to revise that feedback now?â
Tom kissed her. âYeah.â
âAnd how do you feel?â
Tom looked into her eyes again. âIncredible. I donât ever remember feeling so alive.â
âBloody hell, was that your first time?â
Tom went slightly pink. âEr... yeah. You?â
âEr... well. Not entirely.â Becca grinned. She was looking very naughty. âBut never with anyone whoâd saved my life, before. My hero.â She gave him another kiss.
They lay peacefully together, as the hours ticked by. Tomâs brain was starting early again. He kept thinking of Maisie being taken away... shouting accusations.
Nat couldnât really know anything about this, could he?
He knew he should leave it, now. Let the police do their job. But what if Maisie were innocent? He couldnât let her face life imprisonment. It was like Becca had said. He was a decent man.
At six-thirty a.m. he got up and went into the kitchenette. Friarâs Inn was very quiet. Most people wouldnât arrive for work for two hours, yet.
He looked in cupboards and the tiny fridge, found bread, eggs, butter, coffee. He guessed Mouse was the one who had shopped. He found a frying pan.
At seven he went back to the bed. Becca still lay sleeping, a single sheet over her. She looked calm and still and quite exotic. Sheâd got the wrong fairy tale, last night. She was Sleeping Beauty.
Following the theme, he kissed her on the lips. She smiled and woke up. Tom did a Nat and beeped her nose.
âBreakfast?â
Still naked, Becca went and opened a wardrobe set into the wall of the living area. She found a gorgeous pink dressing-gown and pulled it on. She seemed to have taken silk already.
She found two plates and two mugs waiting on the table.
âWow. He cooks, as well.â
âFried egg on fried bread.â Tom pulled back a chair for her. âThe only thing I can cook.â
âHeart attack on a plate.â Becca laughed as she saw Tomâs face. âNo, thatâs great. Iâm impressed. I could do with a coffee, too.â
They sat and ate and drank. Tom was enjoying his fried bread, and his coffee. Everything tasted better, this morning. He hadnât even got a hangover after all that booze.
The worry must still have shown in his face, though. Becca lowered her mug.
âYouâre still thinking about Lucretia Borgia from the kitchens, arenât you? Tom, I really think we should let it go now.â
âWhat she said... I canât get it out of my head. Nat threatening Lewes... why?â
Becca put her knife and fork together.
âCanât see Nat stealing the Mooting Trophy. Though he certainly could have beaten Lewes in a fight. Youâre very tall, you Four Counties people, arenât you? Must be all these eggs you eat.â
âHeâs been my friend since first year.
