Chapter 20

Ping Lau watched through military grade binoculars from a nearby hillside as Brett Wright stood inside the gondola of a rainbow-colored hot air balloon on the back lot of his manufacturing site.

She could see the burst of fire from the balloon’s portable burner wafting heat into the nylon envelope, gradually raising the balloon to its forty-foot height.

Billie Bly stood aside gazing up at the majestic sight, clapping her hands together like an excited schoolgirl. She wore a black leather jacket over a red-and-black plaid long-sleeve shirt and blue jeans.

Ping Lau knew they were on the front end of their date. She had used a sophisticated radio receiver to intercept Bly’s phone transmissions the day before and learned she and her new boyfriend, the person Ping Lau had framed for the bombing of Knowles’ office, were meeting for an early morning balloon ride.

He planned to take her to a tour of a winery in nearby McMinnville where they would stay at a bed and breakfast overnight and return by air the next morning. This gave Ping Lau plenty of time to survey the area and pick the correct location for the murder of Billie Bly.
