Twenty-two

A good brownie never plans a murder.

Is that a hard and fast rule or one of the ones that are okay to break?

- Arienna

Ugh. My body was a traitor. It had come not once, not twice, but three flippin’ times on the ride back to Raza. Seriously, what was wrong with it? My mind said no. My heart said no. But my body?

It rolled over for him anytime he got near it. It was driving me insane.

And messing with my feelings.

I wanted to kill him, not fuck him.

Unless… those two could somehow be combined?

I shook my head, ridding myself of the thought. That might sound like a good idea, get him when he’s least expecting it, but I just knew that would not work out as well as I hoped. Maybe as a last resort…

A knock sounded on my suite’s door and I hurried over to it, really hoping it was Fabia. I’d called for her as soon as we had returned, but it had been over an hour now. Anyone could be behind that door. Knowing my luck, it would be Richard wanting to ravish me.

Moaning, I took a step back.

The idea to hide popped into existence right as the door opened.

My breath caught.

Then released.

“Fabia, thank the gods.” Grabbing her arm, I pulled her into my bedroom. “I need to talk to you.”

She looked at me, breathing heavily, her hands locked behind her head. Sweat glistened her brow and she was dressed in leather armour.

My eyes widened as I took her all in. “Have you been training with them?”

A sheepish, guilty smile curved her lips.

“Was it fun?” I asked, genuinely happy for her. She’d dreamed of training as a warrior for years.

She nodded, her small smile turning into a full on grin. “There are so many things to learn. You should see what even the little kids can do with a blade. And I figured if we’re going to live here, I need to be able to protect you. Nicholas said he had to train for years before he was good enough to join the king’s guard. Can you imagine?”

I bit my cheek to stop from blurting out the question I’d rung her for: how do I kill my husband? Instead, I listened intently, watched as her eyes lit up with glee. She looked so happy…the happiest I’d ever seen her.

And that made me truly hate Richard for the first time. With all my being.

Learning he was still planning on killing me had hurt. Hearing he had wanted to come to my house had made my survival instincts kick in – a crime of opportunity, really. I hadn’t hated him, not like I did now.

But he was going to destroy Fabia’s happiness. He was going to crush that smile and elation on her face. Even worse? He was going to force me to live my last moments of life, however long that was, distant from my best friend. I couldn’t tell her my plans. I couldn’t ruin this happiness for her, and so I would die alone.
