Dear Dad,

We go on vacation next Wednesday, and it seems like our teachers want to work us to death before we leave. Then they want to work us to death while we’re away too. So my science project on Neptune is due Friday, and my project on Missouri is due the day I get back. Also I have a book report due on Thursday, and a math test on Friday and I have to write a two-page composition in French for next Tuesday, and I don’t know even a page’s worth of French words. We can write about anything we want, so I’m going to write about how I’m going to Florida to visit you and Gramps and Nana. I know the French words for father and grandfather and grandmother and sick and I don’t have to know the French words for Florida and Missouri, so I figure I’m almost halfway there.

Neptune turns out to be a very boring planet. I probably should have picked Mercury which is small and hot and moves around real fast. Or Venus which is beautiful and full of gaseous clouds. Or Jupiter which is big or Pluto which is small. Or Saturn which has rings, or Mars, which maybe has life, or even Uranus which sounds like a dirty word. Oh well. Next solar system, I’ll know better.

I wrote a long letter to Victoria Rosamond James. I told her I’d send her pictures from Florida. She wrote in her letter that she knows about Florida because a friend of hers once went to Disney World. Isn’t that funny? I didn’t know people in England had ever heard of Disney World. She says her friend brought her back Mickey Mouse ears as a souvenir. Mom says I don’t have to bring her back anything from Florida, especially anything edible. She’s been on a diet for the past few days and she even turns the TV off when there’s a food commercial. She says she wants to lose weight before New Year’s, so she won’t have to make any resolutions except to get her paperwork done faster.

Kris is going to Indiana for Christmas, and Shannon’s staying home with her family. Darin and her family are going to Los Angeles for the vacation. Her aunt and uncle live there. She says they’ll go to Disneyland. I said if you took me to Disney World, I’d buy her Mickey Mouse ears, and she should buy me Mickey Mouse ears from Disneyland and then we wouldn’t have to worry if we’d like what we got each other. Darin said that was an extremely gifted and talented gift.

I can’t wait until next week. Can you?
