Chapter Seventeen

There were plenty of things he could change about himself, but some he couldn’t.

For instance, his overall physicality.

Ace was a big man. Six feet four inches, broad shoulders, muscular arms and a powerful lower body. Without the use of prosthetics to either make himself even taller, or more likely, to make him look heavier, even overweight, there wasn’t much he could do. He didn’t have any of that kind of equipment with him.

What he did have was a razor, and he’d managed to nab a pair of scissors from the front desk at the hotel.

In his room, he chopped off most of his hair and shaved the sides of his head. He left some stubble on his face and fashioned it into a goatee.

His clothes were a problem, too. In the description the local news station had broadcast, they’d pretty much gotten his clothes right. That, combined with his physical appearance, would make him easily identifiable.

Luckily, he’d passed a Walmart not far from where he’d ended up, and he could use what little cash he had to buy a new T-shirt and baseball cap. Maybe even a pair of sunglasses. He doubted they would have people watching retail stores.

More likely, they’d be watching military supply stores, bus lines, train stations and the airport.

A Walmart in semi-rural Virginia? No way.

Besides, they had a pretty good idea of where he was going and would have people there waiting. The rest was window dressing for the local authorities, to throw them off the trail of what was really happening.

In the meantime, he was fairly safe to move around.

The local police were looking for him, but he wasn’t worried about that. If they had the misfortune to actually stumble their way upon him, they were no match for his size and skill.

His former “team” though? They would be a handful, that was certain.

He checked his watch.

This was the ideal time. Late morning. Plenty of people around.

He packed up his few belongings, went out to his car and started it up.

The Walmart wasn’t busy at all and he bought himself a T-shirt that had a picture of a deer on the front with the words “Buck Fever” across the top. For his hat, he chose a baseball cap that said Miller Time. For sunglasses, he found a thick black pair that reminded him of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator.

Ace made his purchase, went into the store’s bathroom, took off his shirt and threw it into the trash. He put on his new Buck Fever T-shirt, baseball cap and cheap sunglasses and walked back out to the car.

He knew where he was going and planned to do some basic reconnaissance. They would be watching for him, so he would have to be creative.

Ace smiled.

When it came to killing a person, any person, there were always challenges.

But so far, he had always found a way.
