The accusation didn’t even faze her. “Jax, meet my dad, Henry,” she said.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, son,” the doctor spoke up, and the biker narrowed his eyes at him, as if he were trying to place him from somewhere.

“Yeah, I’m sure it is,” he murmured, rubbing his chin. “You know, you’ve seemed a bit off to me, Madison, and I could never quite put my finger on it until now.”

She didn’t like where this was going, her body tensing. “I’m just me, Jax,” she said in her best harmless female voice, widening her eyes.

“Bullshit!” he cried, laughing some more. “You’ve been playing me since day one, and now I can prove it. Because I know for a fact that’s not your dad.”

She shook her head. “He’s raised me since—”

Jax whirled, drawing his gun smoothly and pressing the barrel against her forehead.

She didn’t blink or flinch, standing her ground, because this was about to get very bad. She was fucked.

“Go ahead, lie to me one more time,” Jax snarled, all humor gone from his voice. “Just one more time, Madison, that’s all it’s going to take. One more tiny little lie and we can put an end to this.”

She didn’t say anything, because she knew he wouldn’t hesitate to blow her brains out. What she did do, instead, was make a slight clicking noise to get his attention before flicking her eyes downwards. He glanced down, spotting her quick draw, where her handgun pointed against his most favorite part of his body.

“What do you say we calm down a bit, huh?” she cooed. “Go on and back up now, lower that gun, too.”

Jax hesitated, his jaw ticking.

“Or, you can go ahead and pull that trigger,” she said. “I’ll be dead, and you’ll merely be wishing you were. At least, for a little while, anyway. If you don’t listen to me, you’ll be dead by dawn anyway.”

He narrowed his eyes at her. “What are you talking about?” he asked, but there was curiosity in his voice.

“Back up and we’ll talk,” she shot back.

He finally nodded, taking a few steps back, raising his gun up to show he wasn’t a threat before shoving it in the back of his pants. “Okay, let’s talk,” he said. “Why do you need Bertha? And why do you think I’ll be dead if I don’t listen to you?”

“First answer is easy, I need Bertha so Henry and I can catch a helicopter ride,” Madison replied smoothly.

Jax sneered. “A helicopter ride, huh?” he drawled. “Didn’t realize you had the cash to be chartering a late night whirly bird.”

Madison glanced at the doctor, hoping that he would understand the underlying hang on, this might get bad look in her eyes. He gave the slightest of nods.

“Well, I can explain it,” she said, her voice steady and smooth. “Now, this next part is going to be hard to hear, and I’m going to need you to stay real calm when I say it. I’ve already had a rough night, and the last thing I want to do is get into a shootout.
