Chapter 10

My feet hurt and my legs were sore. I looked around us and stopped for a drink of water and to get my bearings. We had to be close, I knew that, but how close was the question. Jorden sat a few feet away and drank his water in silence. This wedge was getting bigger. I hated it; however, I think it was necessary. I knew he needed to be put in his place in order for me to continue. I had no regrets. If and when I survived with my answers, then we could work this out. I was so sure we could.

Stretching and placing some salve on my calves to help with the soreness, I got up and refastened my waterskin to my side. I looked to him and nodded as he did the same. The quiet was killer. He didn’t want to talk much, which was fine… it was still enough to be disturbing.

We started to walk through a patch of large boulders when we heard some unusual sounds. Grunting and calling in a language neither of us recognized. He walked in front of me as we glanced around the last one.

Creatures unlike anything we had ever seen appeared before my eyes. I looked over them carefully, trying to memorize every detail I could about them for later. Green, mossy skin, a short and stubby snout, pointed ears, much like my own, dark eyes, almost black. Huge hands the size of corner stones like the ones they used to start buildings with. They were all baring scars, no doubt gotten in battle. These things were massive. And they scared me.

Another note to ponder… this world was peaceful, and these things didn’t belong, much like those babbling in fear about the return of evil gods. Where did they come from and how did they get here? Obviously, something was leaking into this realm that shouldn't be, but how? And more importantly, why?

I shook off the chills and looked toward Jorden. “What now, hero?”

He smirked at the snide comment and nodded toward a cave entrance. “There. We need to get in there.”

“And how do you think we are going to do that?”

“With sneaky stealth and quiet voices. Wait, that counts you out.”

“Jerk!”

He chuckled. “Follow me.”

It was nice for one moment not to feel like we were being cold to one another.

He moved around the stones to get as close as possible. I followed, praying that he knew what he was doing. I peered around the corner of another stone and watched as the beings all looked toward the cave.

“Shoot an arrow that way to distract them.”

I pulled my bow, notching an arrow and letting it fly in the direction that he asked me to. Dropping back down into the cover of the stones, I smiled as I saw them all look to one another. They moved a little further away from the entrance.

“Again, same direction.”

I nodded and stood, notching a second arrow and letting it fly towards the same direction.
