Chapter Eleven

Elijah thought about the way her body fit against his all the way home. Their chemistry held promise. It had been all he could do not to just keep driving and take her back to his bed. But he wanted their first time together to be perfect. What that might look like was something he should consider. The promise of sexual pleasure loomed.

It would give him joy to give those funds to the shelter. He hadn’t realized just how wonderful it would feel to make such a big difference to a great cause. If he and Dayle could share an interest in those causes, too, that would give them another interest in common.

Attraction, work, and a common goal made a great place to start a relationship. And, the shocking thing was, he knew that’s what it would be already. This wasn’t going to be a flash in the pan thing, he and Dayle. Their connection had been apparent from the first moment they’d spoken.

Once at home, he had a big glass of water and went to bed. Hopefully, he’d get lucky and sleep through the night with only pleasant dreams to enjoy.

In the morning, he was working on case details at the office when something occurred to him. Right before Sylvia Bennett had been murdered, she had been featured in a local magazine as a successful entrepreneur. The article had come to light during their research.

Digging through the information on the second victim revealed a recent fashion article in one of the newspapers about her. It made him wonder if this was the method by which their killer chose his victims. He picked up his cellphone and called Sanchez. “Yo,” she answered. “Thought you forgot about me.”

“I wouldn’t dare. Thought I’d let you know that I noticed something interesting. Before their deaths, both the first victim and the second had an article published about them.”

“Yeah? Where?”

“The first in a magazine, the second in the newspaper. Can you find out whether Pamela had something similar written about her lately? If so, that might be the evidence we need to tie your attack to the murders.”

“You figure that’s how he’s picking his victims?”

“I hope so. If so, that would also give us a leg up on who he might hit next.”

“Okay. Let me do a search. If I can’t find anything, I’ll track her down and ask her.”

“Thanks.”

Ten minutes later, she was back on the phone. “Your instincts were right on the mark. Six days before the attack on her, she had this blurb in the paper. Top crime reporter of the year or some such bullshit.” He heard the crinkle of paper followed by chewing sounds and knew she was eating a candy bar. “First solid lead, bud. Good work.”

“Thanks. When is the doctor letting you come back?”

“Next Monday.”

“Better than nothing. We miss you.”

“Boo-hoo, you big softie.”

“Bye.”

He went over to his lieutenant’s office and filled him in on the encouraging news. “I’ll make a list of prominent women recently featured in local magazines and papers to see if we can narrow down possible targets.
