“First, let me apologise,” Erma said when the women, including Flora at Georgina’s request, were gathered in the staff dining room.

The five women were seated at the end of the table furthest from the door. Tea and some of Cook’s delicious fruit cake had been served.

“That ostentatious arrival was the brain-child of the Dowager. I had no say in the matter.” She cast her eyes around the table. “I would have preferred to slip in the back way.”

“You’re welcome here, Erma,” Cook said, “however you arrive. The kettle is always on.”

“Thank you, Cook.” Erma glanced briefly at Georgina, Lily, Flora and Cook. She took a deep breath. She might as well get the unpleasant business out of the way. “The Dowager wanted anyone watching this house to be aware of her carriage. She wanted to publicly show her support of you, Georgina. I daresay anyone who cares noticed our little drama.”

“Why?” Georgina asked.

“I am sorry, Georgie.” Erma wished someone else had brought this news. “The Dowager has discovered that your husband is planning yet more problems for you.”

“That man,” Georgina sighed. “What is he doing now?”

“He has approached the courts about suing you for income to maintain him while he recovers from his injuries.” Erma couldn’t look at Georgina when she said this. “It has come to his attention that you are accepting paying guests and spending money improving your house. He claims that as your husband he has a right to any income you earn.”

“I have no money.” Georgina had been expecting the man to continue creating problems for her. It was almost a relief to know what he was planning.

“The Dowager suggests that you consult with Richard Wilson.” Erma’s hand was shaking as she tried to lift her teacup to her lips. She hated bringing anyone distress. “The Dowager wants you to be ready to defend yourself. She believes you need to consult a barrister.”

“In the Name of God!” Cook gasped.

“What is the world coming to?” Lily briefly wondered if Billy Flint knew how to employ someone to do murder.

“I have already been informed by Richard,” Georgina said, “that no barrister will support a woman defying her lawful husband. It would take a man of very high standing and strong convictions to enter into dispute with my husband.” She would not cry – what use were tears?

“The Dowager also suggests that you contact the Earl of Camlough – the man is after all grandfather to three of your stepsons – the Dowager believes he would enjoy entering into battle with your husband.” The Dowager had in fact been quite insistent – she was convinced the Earl had a bone to pick with Georgina’s husband. The man had been previously married to the Earl’s only child. It was only when the Earl witnessed Georgina’s husband’s brutality to her that he’d come to understand his own daughter’s decline and early death.

Georgina looked around the company. The women were practically melting with sympathy for her – lovely to see – but she would need help of the masculine persuasion, she feared.
