Chapter Eighteen

Zana stared at the cards on the table and reached for his zipper. She had to be cheating. She had to be. No one was that lucky at cards.

Darcy smiled like a cat in a creamery. “Lose ‘em, buster. Come on. Another round and the briefs come off.”

This was the last hand. It would end with either her towel or his briefs on the floor. If he didn’t have such a competitive nature, he wouldn’t care which it was, but it was a matter of honor now. After losing time after time, he needed to redeem himself.

Fortunately, it was his turn to deal. He couldn’t prove that she was cheating, but at least he knew the count would be true and correct. What happened after that was a matter of luck and skill.

Zana dealt five cards each. Darcy studied her hand and asked for one card. He looked at his pair of jacks and took three. The only chance he had to beat her was if he got something better.

He didn’t.

He was ready to reach for his briefs when, amazingly, Darcy put her cards face-down on the table. “I fold,” she sighed and dropped her towel. Growling in his true voice, Zana demanded to know how she’d done it. “How in heaven’s name did you win so many hands in a row?”

Darcy grinned, seemingly unaffected by his voice. Whatever trick she’d learned to shield herself, she was clearly using it now.

“I’m that good,” she swore. “Really. Take me to Vegas sometime and I’ll make you a fortune.”

Zana was skeptical. Unlike gargoyles, this Guardian of the Sacred Light had no qualms about hiding or bending the truth. She was human. Humans lied. Politicians made careers of it.

“You’re a card shark,” he stated flatly. “What do you do? Count cards? We’ll get thrown out as soon as we get started.”

“No, we won’t,” she swore. “I don’t count cards… but I am an intuitive player. I trust my instincts in a game. The only time I get in trouble is when I start second-guessing things. It’s too bad they don’t work as well for other things like playing the stock market, but my gut feelings at a card table are never wrong. Right now, they’re saying you’d rather be fucking than fighting. Am I right?”

She was, but that was beside the point. His gut instinct was telling him to bend her over the arm of the sofa, spank the attitude out of her, and nail her sassy ass.

Telling himself that Lukas
